  1. Matter: It’s what the world’s made of.

  2. The scientific name given to all materials is called matter Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass. Solids, liquids and gases occupy space and have mass, so solids, liquids and gases are states of matter.

  3. Solids Gasses Liquids What do you know about matter?

  4. Solids • Solids hold their own shape. • Cannot Flow • Cannot be compressed. Read more!

  5. Liquids • Liquids take the shape of their container. • Can Flow • Cannot be compressed. Read more!

  6. Gases • Gasses spread out to fill the entire space given. • Can flow • Can be compressed Read more!

  7. Does Gas have mass? • Set up the apparatus as shown in figure (a). • Record the mass of the “empty” balloon. (a) Make sure the balance is set to grams!! (b) • Blow up the balloon just like in figure (b). • Record the mass of the inflated balloon.

  8. STATES of matter? What would it take for matter to move from one state to another?

  9. Energy determines the state!

  10. Particles in Solids: • Are packed tightly together • Have very little energy • Held in fixed position by bonds

  11. Particles in Liquids: • Are loosely packed • Have medium energy levels

  12. Particles in Gasses: • Move freely • Have LOTS of energy

  13. Mixtures may be in different phases • Solid? • Liquid? • Gas?

  14. When energy is added, particles move faster! When energy is taken away, particles move slower! Add or Subtract Energy. . .

  15. Solid + Energy = ? • When energy is added to solids, they become liquids! • Melting

  16. Liquid + Energy = ? • When energy is added to liquids, they become gasses! • Boiling

  17. Changing States • There are several names for matter changing states: • State change • Phase change • Physical change

  18. Melting point Boiling point Heating a solid Temperature 100oC WATER 0oC Time

  19. States of Matter
