  1. Developing your Career in HR

  2. My Background • Worked for 6 companies and consulted for many • Strategic Dimensions – an HR recruitment business • CRF – a syndicated research project of 110 companies (talent, leadership change) • PARC – a research group of 50 companies (performance, reward, governance) • SDL – a learning business • Devonshire House – senior management dining club

  3. Employment Opportunities in HR • In the last 20 years these companies have ceased to exist: BOC, BA, BAA, BPB, Blue Circle, National Power, Powergen, Gallaher, Massey Ferguson, Redland, Hanson, Halifax, Granada, Forte, Westinghouse, Bass, Woolworths, Cadbury, Rowntree etc. etc. • US Businesses are in retreat: HP, Mars, P&G, 3M, Gillette, Kodak, Avon, Ford, General Motors etc. etc. • Public Sector? • Will this trend be reversed?

  4. On the other Hand…. • Consultancies large and small are recruiting • Private equity needs people management skills • New companies e.g. Paypal, BSkyB, eBay • Independent Practitioners • Interims • We have a more fluid and flexible labour force

  5. What are the implications of this for you? ?

  6. What are the implications of this for you? • Less company sponsored development • A need to change jobs to advance • A need to develop an external support and information network – because you really really need it! • A need to develop new skills – What? • A need to be ‘expert’ in something – ‘Something to sell’ • Always looking for the next opportunity – Don’t wait till you want it! • A plan or perspective – What do you want to do now? In 5 years?

  7. So what do organisations want/need? • Business understanding • Good interpersonals • HR Expertise – what do you know? • Analysis of People and Situations • A network of good contacts

  8. Some Myths Dispelled • Organisations select the best candidates • The people you meet will be expert interviewers/assessors • Headhunters have your best interests at heart • Headhunters have great systems • Performance beats acceptability • Chief Executives/HRD’s like to hear the truth • Organisations know what they are looking for • Job performance is more important than image management.

  9. Some Recommendations • Know what you want to do in 12 months times and 5 years time • Cultivate Headhunters • Build a useful network • Accept invitations • Worthwhile CPD • Read financial papers • Being interviewed is a skill – keep your hand in! • Talk and act on feedback • Be determined!
