  2. Facts About Discarding Computers • 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed every year • Only around 15% of e-waste is currently recycled • 80 to 85% of electronic products were thrown to landfills or incinerators  produce toxic gases  acid rain • e-waste will cause damage to humans’ body (e.g. blood and kidneys)

  3. Where do the old computers go? • 80% of the e-waste ends up in developing countries like China, India or Nigeria • low-wage workers bathed the computers parts like CPUs in acid to retrieve metalcomponents • people there are exposed to chemicals like mercury, lead or other toxic substances • Rest of the wastes will go to landfills

  4. What can you do with your old computers - Donation • Choice 1: Donation • Try to donate the computer (As many parts as you can) Reuse always comes first, think if you really need a new one before you donate or throw them away.

  6. What can you do with your old computers? - Recycle • Choice 2: Recycle • Divide your computer into PARTS • RAM • check if you have other devices that fit your old RAM • if you no longer have any use for the RAM, try to sell them

  7. What can you do with your old computers? - Recycle • CPU • try to remove your CPU from the motherboard • try not to touch the pins on the CPU • sell it to the recycling stores • Monitor • possibly the most valuable part of your computer

  8. What can you do when you want to change a new computer? - Recycle • Hard drives • Don’t forget to back up the important things that you need! • Erase all your personal information in the computer with software • Sell it to second hand computer stores and they will reuse the hard drive
