  2. Prosecution (The State) • On Monday the 22nd of December of last year, at approximately 4:00 PM, James King and Bobo Evans enter a drugstore on 145th Street in Harlem. The purpose of the crime was to rob the drugstore. During the crime 55 year old store owner Alguinaldo Nesbitt was shot with his own gun and killed. Both money and 5 cartons of cigarettes were stolen. Steve Harmon was the accused lookout for the crew.

  3. The Defense (Steve’s Attorney) • If you consider him innocent now, and by law you must, if you have not prejudged him, then the defense believes they can convince you that nothing the state (Prosecution) will produce will challenge that innocence.

  4. The Defense • The Defense ask you the jury, is to look at Steve Harmon now and remember that at this moment the American system of justice demands that you consider him innocent. He is innocent until proven guilty.

  5. Monster Notes: July 6th • 16 year old Steve Harmon is in the Manhattan Detention Center, Cell Block D • Steve Harmon is thin and brown skinned • The beginning setting is the Manhattan Detention Center in New York, New York

  7. Monster Notes: July 6th • The Author’s Purpose is to inform the readers how the American Justice System works • Learning to face the consequences of your crimes is part of the story theme. • Steve is on trial for felony robbery and murder

  8. Monster Notes: July 6th • Steve went to Stuyvesant High School • A stenograph types what is said in the courtroom • Steve hides his head under a blanket to avoid hearing the sounds in the detention center

  9. Monster Notes: July 6th • Mr. Sawicki is Steve’s mentor and film club teacher • A dispensary is a prison clinic • Steve thinks he is a monster because the prosecutor Sandra Petrocelli called him one

  10. Monster Notes: July 6th • Steve’s defense attorney is Kathy O’Brien • Asa Briggs is James King’s Attorney • James King is 23 years old and leader of the crew. He is the one who is accused of shooting Alguinado Nesbitt

  12. Monster Notes: July 6th • The crime took place at a Drugstore in Harlem on December 22 • Osvaldo Cruz is 14, and the youngest member of the crew. He is a member of the Diablos

  13. Monster Notes: July 6th • Jose Delgado is the first witness, is worked at the drugstore and found the body • As July 6th Entry ends Steve flashes back to when he was throwing rocks with his friend Tony

  14. Monster Notes: July 7th • Steve states that if he didn’t think about the movie he would go crazy • Wendell Bolden reveals that Richard “Bobo” Evans told him about the robbery, and sold him cigarettes

  15. Monster Notes: July 7th • Steve has a flashback when he thinks back to the time James King said “ If I had a crew, I could get paid” • A character trait of James King is he is unscrupulous

  16. Monster Notes: July 7th • The main motive for the robbery of the drugstore is the crew wanted money • When the Jury adjourns, that means the Jury is leaving the courtroom • The Atmosphere is menacing when Steve hears another inmate being beaten

  17. Monster Notes: July 7th • The Prosecuting Attorney that called Steve a Monster is Sandra Petrocelli • Asa Briggs is the Defense Attorney for James King

  18. Monster Notes: July 7th • Jerry wanted him and Steve to become the superheroes Batman and Robin • James King’s Voice/Tone was a drawl

  19. Monster Notes: July 7th • The judge can overrule decisions made by the attorneys • To object to a comment is to disagree • Pertinent information means that the information is important

  20. Monster Notes: July 7th • Adjourn means to put off to a later time • Reconvene means to get together again • Corridor means hallway • Silhouetted means shadow or outline of a figure • Crew means gang • Testimony means statement under oath
