  3. Do you know? • What is the capital city of Jordan? Amman • What is the currency used? Jordanian Dinar • What is the official language? Arabic but English is also used

  4. Religion • Jesus was baptised in the river Jordan by John the Baptist

  6. The City of Petra • The word ‘Petra’ means stone • Petra is an ancient city that has over 800 fantastic rock structures • Petra is the most popular tourist spot in Jordan • It has been called a ‘rose-red city, half as old as time’

  7. Petra • Petra is a huge city that was carved into rock by the Arab people. • Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1km in length with high cliffs on both sides. • The colours and formations of the rocks are dazzling.

  8. Petra was carved into the rock 2,000 years ago but was only discovered by the Europeans in the 19th century

Dead Sea • The Dead Sea is in the north west of Jordan. • It is the lowest point on earth • The River Jordan is the only water source flowing into the Dead Sea. • Small springs under and around it form pools of quicksand along the edges. • Dead Sea means the “sea of salt”. • There is so much salt in the Dead Sea it makes it very easy for people to float.
