  1. Goal-line technology An activity from the Metahuman unit.

  2. OBJECTIVE • To weigh up the ethical, economic, social and cultural factors involved in the adoption of new technology.

  3. Goal! We’re back in the game. Oh no! The ref didn’t see it. Not Fair!! We need goal-line technology.

  4. How the technology works: Sensors in the ball detect cables under the goal line. If the ball crosses the line the referee gets a signal INSTANTLY. They use similar technology in cricket and tennis. It could reduce errors, but should we adopt it?

  5. Look at the issue through different lenses: Ethical lens Cultural lens Social lens Decide which arguments are most important, and come to a decision. Prepare a presentation for the next FIFA board meeting. Make sure you explain your reasoning.

  6. SSX SS 1 METAHUMAN: GOAL-LINE TECHNOLOGY Argument 1: It would be no fun if there was nothing to argue about after the match. Argument 11:Humans make errors. We just have to accept that. Argument 6: Football is about teamwork not technology. Argument 12:Using technology could slow the pace of the game and make it less exciting. Argument 2: The technology costs half a million pounds. Many football clubs can’t afford it. Argument 7:If matches are seen to be fair, fans won’t get into fights so often. Argument 13: We could employ officials to monitor the goal line. It would cost less than the new technology. Argument 3:Clubs earn a fortune when they sell players. They can afford the technology. Argument 8:If we have more technology we won’t need skilled referees. Argument 4:. Everybody has the right to an accurate decision. Argument 9: Technology will make the game fairer by eliminating errors. Argument 14: Players will lose respect for officials if technology takes the decisions. Argument 5:If a poor decision makes a team lose, it cuts their club’s earnings. Argument 15:The technology would help referees by giving them more authority. Argument 10: Younger fans expect to see technology being used.
