  3. Volunteer Statement It shall be the Library policy to make use of volunteers when there is a demonstrated need for additional help, which cannot be provided by regular staff and student assistants. Volunteer employees are not intended to replace regular positions, but to augment the Library's present resources.

  4. Members of the Bergenfield High School community will be empowered with 21st Century skills to be effective users, producers, and communicators of ideas and information. Vision Statement

  5. Library Floor Plan Volunteers of the library need to familiarize themselves with the library floor plan.

  6. Volunteer Duties Working with the Children Responsibilities of the volunteers will be to read to, and with, the children as well as assisting them with any needs that they may have. Such assistance may be with helping students find a book in the library as well as helping them find information on the computer.

  7. Volunteer DutiesShelving Fiction Fiction books are shelved alphabetically by author. Fiction books reside on the left side of the library. Non-Fiction Books Non Fiction books reside on the right side of the library near the Bibliography section. Non-Fiction books are shelved using the Dewey Decimal system. Books using the Dewey Decimal system are in numerical order.

  8. Volunteer DutiesShelving Periodicals, Reference, and Biography These three book sections are located around the perimeter of the library. Please refer to the floor plan when shelving books.

  9. Volunteer DutiesThe Dewey Decimal System

  10. These books are in correct Dewey decimal order. It is just like counting. Notice that the only time we worry about the alphabetical order in the second line is when the Dewey number is exactly the same. You can see this in the 567 books. These books are also in correct order. If you think they are not in order it is probably because you think that .413 is a bigger number than .51 or .51 is a bigger number than .7 but that is not true. Although .413 is longer, it is not more. In the library, you can't put zeros on the books so it is best to think about the point where the numbers become different. Compare 365.413 365.51 The 3, 6, and 5 are all the same. The 4 and the 5 are different. The 4 is smaller so it would come first. It doesn't matter how many other numbers come after it.

  11. Volunteer DutiesOther Responsibilities Check In/Out The Bergenfield Library Media Center will be using the program called Destiny to check in and out their books. Copying & Bulletin Boards Volunteers of the library may be asked to copy and/or create bulletin boards on an as needed basis.

  12. Volunteer DutiesOther Responsibilities Emergency Procedures Volunteers of the library are expected to read and understand the emergency procedures as outlined by the district. Please refer to the red School Safety Manual .

  13. Volunteer DutiesReporting Neglect or Abuse In New Jersey, any person having reasonable cause to believe that a child has been subjected to abuse or acts of abuse should immediately report this information to the State Central Registry (SCR). If the child is in immediate danger, call 911 as well as 1-877 NJ ABUSE (1-877-652-2873). A concerned caller does not need proof to report an allegation of child abuse and can make the report anonymously

  15. Volunteer Statement of Commitment It is understood that my time will be worked out cooperatively with the school volunteer coordinator and the teacher or staff member with whom I am working. I agree to attend an orientation meeting and any meetings that may occasionally be necessary to help me in my job. If I find that I must be absent, I will notify the school as far in advance as possible. To the best of my knowledge I have no physical or mental disability which would prevent my working with students, and I agree to abide by all the school rules and Board of Education regulations which are applicable to me.
