  1. CULTURE The cultural landscape involves the modification of the natural landscape by human activities. Ethnicity may be visible. Look at the built landscape to hints into the culture of a people. The similarities of the cultural landscape of the suburbs. A built landscape.

  2. Artifacts: What a culture leaves behind. Cultural Geography includes the study of how culture vary over space.

  3. Material culture (things we leave behind – buildings) and non-material culture (things we believe)

  4. Customs: practices followed by a group of people. Traditions: a collection of customs passed down. A habit is something a person does consistently. A single attribute to a culture. (wearing colorful clothing) Culture traits: A combination of culture traits. Culture complex: A culture bag helps people make decisions. Cultural baggage can hold people back.

  6. When material (things we leave behind – buildings) and non-material (things we believe) culture spread, the process is called cultural diffusion. Carl Sauer – cultural landscape The rate of diffusion is influenced by “distance decay.” The influence of culture weakens as distance increases. Culture moves when people move. Diffusion occurs by trade, travel, and migration.
