    2. History of Orphanages There are three main eras where we see an upsurge in orphanages: 1. mid-1700s 2. mid-1800s 3. World War I and immediately after (1914-1930)

    3. Why did children have been in orphanages?? Reasons…… Woman died during childbirth. Women could not provide for there child. Children will learn to live on the streets.

    5. The Great Depression took a heavy toll?? Some mothers and fathers simply deserted their families. The federal government provided milk and cod-liver oil.

    6. Parents & Children Parents who were unable to feed their children could drop off them at the church and pick them up when they were able to feed them again.

    7. Children Bureau Chubby babies posed at the Orphanage in the 1920’s. The children from the Indianapolis Orphan’s Asylum enjoyed an outing sponsored by the B.P.O. Elks at Fairfield park in 1903.

    9. Timeline In Mid-1800s-It brought the industrial revolution. By 1850-New York state had 27 orphanages run by both public and private funds and yet there was still an estimated 10,000 street kids with no home or guardian. By 1870-society was looking for additional solutions to clean up the number of street kids.

    10. Timeline In 1900-the institution was updated and equipped with electric lights and plumbing. On March 16, 1900-the Leath orphan Asylum and Children’s Home for orphan and Destitute Children published its Constitution and by-laws. On World War 1 (1914-1918)-the post-war period marked the beginning of the modern day orphan phenomena. By 1930-the Great Depression took a heavy toll on local families and children.

One of the reason why children have been orphanages is, because people did not live long lives as we do now and many woman died during childbirth leaving a number of uncored for children. By 1930, the Great Depression took its on local families and children. Some mothers and fathers simply deserted their families rather than face the prospect of not being able to feed and clothe their children.
