11. Why is internet safety important? • Prevent identity theft • Avoid damage to your computer • Prevent losing money to scams • Avoid getting junk mail at your house or in your email

12. Today we will talk about ways to stay safe on the web. This is not meant to SCARE you; it is meant to prepare you.

13. Dangers • What is a virus? • Think about it in terms of illness

14. Computer Virus What is a Virus? • A virus is acomputer program or file that can make your computer “crash” and could permanently damage it. What does it do? • It can infect your computer with harmful information and invades your files, making copies of them. It is possible to spread to multiple computers by sharing information.

15. How do I protect my computer from viruses? Use Anti-Virus Software: • Software that prevents and detects computer viruses. • What does it do? • Keeps viruses and other damaging software from entering or harming your computer. • Scans incoming information from the Internet, attachments and Emails. • Run and update this software regularly to make sure it is performing as it should be. Running a “Scan” • Searches all your programs, files and folders for viruses and harmful software. • Make sure you are using the most up to date version of your Anti-Virus to get the best results

18. Let’s talk about Pop-ups

19. How would you deal with this on your computer?

20. What are Pop-Up Ads? • A smaller window that appears over a the information you want when you are using the internet • Often designed sell a product or get more internet traffic to a website • Some will ask for email address and other personal information • Some pop-ups can spread computer viruses

21. What Can I do about Pop-Ups? • Most of the time you can close the ads using the X and continue using the internet • Sometimes the close option is a fake X and will lead to more advertisements • You can use your keyboard to close the browser if there are many pop-ups or if the pop-up will not go away • ALT + F4 • CTRL + SHIF T+ ESC

22. What if something like this fills your screen and you can’t close out? What do you do? • Hold down the Alt key and then tap F4

23. Can we block pop-ups? • YEP. Though the steps vary for each browser. • For whichever browser you use, go to Google and search for information on how to block pop-ups • Check your results with the corresponding PowerPoint slide and write the steps in your packet

24. Block Pop-ups on Chrome • Chrome already blocks its pop-ups, so you do not have to add anything. • Google Search: block pop-ups chrome and see what you find. • Can you figure out how to allow pop-ups?

25. Block Pop-ups in Internet Explorer • Open Internet Explorer • Click on the Tools Menu or Tool Button • Click the Privacy tab, and then do either of the following: • Click to select Block pop-ups to turn Pop-up Blocker on. • Click to clear Block pop-ups to turn Pop-up Blocker off.

Block Pop-ups in Firefox Browser • To access the pop-up blocker settings: • Click the menu button  and choose Options • Select the Content panel. • In the content panel: • Block pop-up windows: Uncheck this to disable the pop-up blocker altogether. • Exceptions: This is a list of sites that you want to allow to display pop-ups. The dialog has the following choices: • Allow: Click this to add a website to the exceptions list. • Remove Site: Click this to remove a website from the exceptions list. • Remove All Sites: Click this to remove all of the websites in the exceptions list.

THE BIGGEST SAFETY CLUE ON THE INTERNET HTTPS://means that this is a secure site, you could share personal information through this site (banks, government sites, shopping, etc) HTTP://is not secureThis is not a secure site for sharing private information (bank info, social security, credit card numbers, etc.)

28. What about passwords? They are meant to keep our information safe, but how are we supposed to strengthen them while remembering all the different ones we need.

29. What are some rules you use when making passwords?

30. Password Rules • 6-8 or more characters is always better • Use capital letters, lower case letters and numbers • Do not use personal information, pets names, spouse’s/children’s names, birthdays • Use different passwords for different accounts • Chance your passwords every 3-12 months, more often for sensitive sites (banking, anything with your credit card attached), less often for less used/not sensitive information

33. Have the conversation • Be a nosy parent • What sites are your kids looking at? Who are they talking to? Is their use age appropriate? • Explain the necessity of keeping personal information private • Passwords, home address and phone number • Explain that they need to be careful about what they share online • Many things posted on the Internet (Facebook, Myspace, Instant Messenger) can be copied and share without permission • The internet is a permanent place • You’re online safety is dependent on the people around you. If your child shares personal information or downloads dangerous files, your personal information is at risk. • Take the time to talk about Internet Safety

Review Activity • We will learn a few more things about safety as we progress, as we have already learned a few important things. • Grab some markers and make a sign that lists three important internet safety tips. What do you think is important for others to know about the internet? • Example on next page….
