  1. The Target Box The nuclear reactions take place at the target foil inside the Target Box. The box is a thin (2 mm) aluminum sphere accommodating a start detector, a target wheel, an annular position sensitive for scattered ions, a beam monitor detector and the gamma array. DSSSD • Target materialrather thick 2 mg/cm2Si, Mg, Ni... beam direction first stop detector Stop detector target & Faraday cup shield • The start transmission detector shown below is a thin position sensitive transmission detector, located in front of the target, to be used as trigger and TOF start. The detector can provide a start signal (~200 ps resolution) at high counting rates (<106 ions/s). Inserted in the beam the transmission factor is 0.88. Such a device will also be used as a first stop detector. • A Faraday cup with a thin input window and 1 bar gas pressure together with a Multi-Wire Chamber ensures beam monitoring and final beam stop after the target box (see sketch above). With 10 wires in each direction and a delay line readout technique, the monitoring of the position of the beam can be achieved up 105 ions/s. It handles pulsed or dc beams, and most of the activity is removed with the gas flow. Start detector (Typical potentials)
