Blog 1: BornAgainPews.com CHURCH PEWS THROUGH THE HISTORY TO THE MODERN TIMES A lot many of the churches in old days were constructed more or less like a dome or a central area where the preachers, pastors and priests would sermonize, whereas the people attending worship shall stand around. Initially it was good but after some time it changed in 17th century, as the congregation increased to hundreds of people. This aroused a need of seating arrangements in the church. As the existing church pews and furniture were reticent for the rich people, later the pews in the name of the family were introduced. The unfortunate part for this was that even if the dedicated family didn’t arrive in the church, no one else could use those church pews. Even if a family did not arrive for worship, the pew bench still remained empty. Later, around mid-1800s, churches started to evolve with further changes. It became very exceptional to actually pay for a held-in-reserve place on a church pew. Today the church pews are transformed totally into a different format. Now with the church renovation, the entire church furniture and church pews have also been transformed. They have been made decorative and renovated with colors, and unique designs and artwork. With every event or any celebration they are decorated and furbished beautifully. The best molding of the church pew from traditional to contemporary is that now they are for all. While congregations, the church pews are used by the worshipers all the time.
