Who’s Involved • Funded • UK and International NGOs, regulators and companies • Supported • FishBase (ICLARM) • United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) • UNEP • The FreshwaterLife Network • +200 members • European associations • Consultants, Academics, Industry, Government agencies

  4. The proposal • To produce a truly pan-European key to the aquatic stages of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) Fig 1. Baetidae: a. Procloeon bifidum, 8 mm long, from life.b.Cloeon dipterum, 6 mm long (half grown), from life. c. hind end of C. dipterum in dorsal view, from life.

  5. Importance of Ephemeroptera • Water quality assessment, particularly WFD • Popular with anglers, naturalists and for teaching and training C. pennulatum, 9 mm long, from life.

  6. Method • Innovative approach using an iterative process • Existing FBA key (digitised and web enabled) • Local expert knowledge harnessed through FwL network • Iterative editing by FBA specialists.

  7. Active key • FwL information management system (from UN FAO) to handle online collaboration and development process. • The modified features will be added to the existing Lucid Phoenix interactive mayfly key

  8. Funding • Total estimated cost of the project approx. €44k • Requesting €22k from ENBI • FwL will provide €22k • Start project in summer 2003

  9. Mayfly key-Deliverable • A dichotomising key progressively expanded across the EU. • ENBI product available on internet within a year • First of many – prioritised development (WFD)
