  5. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom in 1777. This important piece of legislation establishes that "no man shall suffer on account of his religious opinions and beliefs". This bill inspired the First Amendment, of the Constitution in 1789. It is the first document in American history that provided for the separation of church and state. Jefferson considered writing the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedoms one of the three things he was most proud of during a lifetime of great accomplishments. The other two were for writing the Declaration of Independence and being the founder of the University of Virginia.
