The People We Serve • 19.5 million patients served through more than 8,100 Health Center sites • Over 500,000 people living with HIV/AIDS receive Ryan White services provided through more than 900 grantees. Two-thirds are racial or ethnic minorities • 34 million women, infants, children, and adolescents benefit from maternal and child health programs • 10,000 National Health Service Corps clinicians are working in underserved areas • About 16,750 safety net providers participate in the 340B drug discount program • Financial support to colleges/universities training and curriculum development • Others: Rural Health, Poison Control, Organ Donation, Vaccine Injury Compensation

  4. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) builds healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care.

  10. The NHSC was created in response to the health care crisis that emerged in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s when retiring physicians left many areas of the country without medical services.

  11. 1970s 1980s 1990s 2000s • Early 1990s — Only 1,000 providers serve • Mental health disciplines added to LRP • Over 2,500 providers in service by end of decade • NHSC created • First scholarships • Grew from 181 providers to over 1,800 • Budget 10 times larger by end of decade • Loan Repayment Program (LRP) launched • Predicted physician surplus—budget reduced • Field strength at 1,500 by 1989 • Recovery Act and Health Care Reform —increased funding • Unprecedented growth in field strength • Number of NHSC members projected to double from 2008 to 2011

  17. Offers both full-time and part-time options

  18. Up to Up to $60,000 $170,000 2 yearS 5 yearS The full-time program offers up to $60,000 in tax-free loan repayment for 2 years of service, and up to $170,000 for a 5-year service commitment. With continued service beyond 5 years, health care providers may be able to pay off all their student loans.

  20. Loan Repayment Award The NHSC Loan Repayment Program offers two levels of funding, based upon the need of the community in which a provider works, as defined by Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) score Initial Award Amounts

Eligibility • U.S. citizen or national • Currently work, or applying to work, at an NHSC-approved site • Have unpaid government or commercial loans for school tuition, reasonable educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses, segregated from all other debts • Licensed to practice in state where employer site is located

  24. Eligible Must be licensed in one of the following disciplines

  25. Psychiatrist • Psychologist (health service) • Licensed clinical social worker • Psychiatric nurse specialist • Marriage and family therapist • Licensed professional counselor

  26. Physician (MD or DO) • Nurse practitioner (primary care) • Certified nurse-midwife • Physician assistant
