  1. By Aaron NelsonI blog at SCVMM This!

  2. Why Virtualize • Four components make virtualization very compelling. *(to me) • Live Migration • If you need to switch physical machines you can. • Snapshots / Reverts • Oops, that upgrade didn’t work. Let’s undo it. • Self Service VM creation • Because waiting is bad • Machine Cloning

  3. Using Just Hyper-V You Can Do This • Setting up on a local machine. Windows Server 2008 R2 My Work VM Windows 7 Ultimate A VM that you want to test The Hypervisor Another VM that you want to test Yet another VM that you want to test

  4. A Generic SCVMM Scenario Your Work VM Windows 7 Ultimate SCVMM Server • Setting up on a corporate Domain Windows Server 2008 R2 A VM that you want to test The Hypervisor Another VM that you want to test Yet Another VM that you want to test

  5. My Laptop SCVMM Setup Only Make it This Hard if You Want to • Setting up on a local machine w/ Domain. Windows Server 2008 R2 My Work VM Windows 7 Ultimate A VM that you want to test The Hypervisor Another VM that you want to test Domain Controller & SCVMM

  6. PowerShell Support! • Take a look at last week’s blogs from The Scripting Guys at Microsoft: • http://blogs.technet.com/heyscriptingguy/archive/2010/03/29/hey-scripting-guy-march-29-2010.aspx • Virtual Machine Manager Cmdlets and Windows PowerShell • Use VMM Cmdlets to Move Virtual Machines and Virtual Machine Hosts? • How Can I Create Virtual Machines? • Notify a VMM Self-Service User That Their Virtual Machine Is About to Expire?

  7. Installing & Setting Up • Add the Hyper-V Server “Role” • Add the Wireless Networking “Feature” • External Networks for connecting out • Internal Networks for containing the mayhem

  8. What’s this Self-Service Business • Microsoft’s System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) allows a central repository ‘library’ for administrators. • It also allows authorized users to snapshot, revert, and even spin up new VMs.

  9. SCVMM • You can use SCVMM to P2V existing machines • Migrate Storage • Duplicate VMs • You can also V2V from VMware to Hyper-V • (for example)

  10. Support? • Virtualization Team from Microsoft • New PowerShell commands allow the ability to automate the recreation /revert /new-creation of not just single machines but entire groups of machines.

  11. Books Exam guides for the old exam that are pretty good Great Resources for doing this This Book Rocks!

  12. Certifications • 70-652 The old one • MCTS • 70-659 The New one. Lots of SCVMM • MCTS • 70-693 • MCITP
