  4. Who Are We? • Alberta 55 Plus is the ideal mix of sport, competition and fun • It’s a challenge for your Mind, Body and Spirit • It’s the basis of community and friendship

Mission Statement • Alberta 55 Plus believes that every individual 55 years of age and over has the fundamental right to the opportunity for enrichment, fulfillment and improved quality of life and health through a broad variety of recreation, sports and organized games • Alberta 55 Plus provides a unified voice and a sociable atmosphere for older adults to engage in physical and other activities at the level of their choice

History • Alberta has been a pioneer in sport, recreation & fitness development for seniors • 1976 - Seniors Games program called 60+ OL’LYMPYX for Calgary seniors (precursor to Alberta Senior Games) • 1979 & 1980 - 60+ age group included in Alberta Summer & Winter Games (senior’s presence established on the Alberta Games scene) • January 1980 - ALBERTA SENIOR CITIZENS SPORT AND RECREATION ASSOCIATION (ASCSRA) formed

  14. Something for Everyone! • Alberta 55 Plus also includes a Cultural Component in the Summer Games: Arts & Crafts and Creative Writing • Members can enter their long and short stories, poems, handicrafts, woodworking, photography, etc. for competition! • Average about 450 entries per Games!

  15. Games Zones • Zone 1 – Sunny South • Zone 2 – Big Country • Zone 3 – Calgary • Zone 4 – Parkland • Zone 5 – Black Gold/Yellowhead • Zone 6 – Edmonton Marigold • Zone 7 – North Eastern Alberta • Zone 8 – Peace Country

  16. How to Participate • Become a member in the Zone where your primary residence is • Talk to your Zone representatives and sign up for playoffs in as many events as you want!! • Compete and have fun!

How to Participate • Some Zones are broken up into Areas: • You may have to compete in an Area Playoff • Win your Area and Zone Playoff and get invited to the Alberta 55 Plus Games • All accommodation, food and travel is provided for the participants! 2009 Alberta 55 Plus Winter Games Playoffs: Nov. 15 – Jan. 15 2009 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games Playoffs: May – June, 2009

  18. National Scene Winners at Alberta 55 Plus Games and Provincial Competitions have first opportunity to represent TEAM ALBERTA at the Canada 55 Plus Games!!!

  19. National Scene • Alberta Plus is actively involved in promoting 55 Plus Games at the national level • Alberta members provided impetus for incorporation of Canada Senior Games Association in 1991 • 1st Canadian Senior Games was held in Regina, SK in September 1996
