  1. Trimester 2 Science vocabulary and concepts: Heat & Energy

  2. Energy • the ability to causechange Heat Energy Heat Energy

  3. Potential Energy • the storedenergy an object has due to its position or chemical composition

  4. Kinetic energy • the energy of motion--the more mass or speed, the more kinetic energy

  5. The Law of Conservation of Energy • states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVxEEn3w688&feature=related

  6. Electrical energy • energy of moving electrical charges

  7. Electromagnetic energy • energy that is transmitted through space in the form of electromagnetic waves

  8. Thermal energy • the totalamount of energy from the movement of the particles in an object

  9. Chemical energy • energy stored in the chemical composition of matter

  10. Sound energy • energy produced by the vibration of particles that people and animals can detect

  11. Mechanical energy • energy that moves objects

  12. Nuclear energy • energy stored in the nucleus of an atom

  13. Heat • the flow of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object

  14. Temperature • a measure of the average amount of kinetic energy of the particles in an object

  15. Conduction • the transfer of heat energy from one object to another when they are touching

  16. Convection • the transfer of heat energy from the movement of particles in a gas or a liquid

  17. Radiation • the transfer of heat energy through electromagnetic waves

  18. Conductor • an object or material that transfersenergy easily

  19. Insulator • an object or material that doesn’ttransfer energy easily
