  1. Reading Buddies Saad Al-Mana Grade 9-C 20/5/2011

  2. Getting Involved For this community and service I actually had two different jobs which were helping two different classes. My first class was pre school 3-E which was with the youngest students at QA that was basically just playing and talking with them about random stuff to make them get used to social life. The second class which we attended was grade 3-b with Mr. Simpson which was with a fairly older students that were more mature and on task, but as well we just talked about random stuff involving school and helped them with their projects and work. I had 4 sessions with the preschool 3 students and 5 sessions with the rade 3 students.

  3. My Community As you know our Community and Service project was to serve the School, actually we had to serve the young students that are building their way to the future. The primary students were very eager and excited about this particular project that we are running since it includes seeing new and younger students and spending time with them. The young students got us into a lot of fun and in the same time we helped them learn. They liked to spend a lot of time with us and they got excited as soon as we entered the class, its nice to learn outside the normal routine. Describing them in one word would be “enthusiastic”.

  4. Our Service Towards the Community This particular community and service fits our school the best because our school likes to build our social life as well as our learning to be the perfect citizen in the future, such as the fact as our school field trips and Week Without Wall, This project makes us socialize with young students in our school and make them ready to talk to new people and socialize with them. This project is the true meaning behind community and service because we are volunteering to help people with no charges as a favor. This project is to go to young students and read books with them, but now we are just helping them with their work and just socializing with them to build their character.

  5. Plan Our plan was to go to the primary school each week at Sunday during lunch break and stay for 40mins with the young students, we had to help them with anything they had that day such as projects, studying for tests or their random work each week. We had to do a minimum of 8 sessions which we had to do each week once, that lead to almost 2 weeks and a half. We were 4 students in the class, Me, Abdulrahman, Lulwa and Azza and each of us were in charge of one table of 4-6 students. We basically helped and talked to them for 40mins and in the end of the lesson the teacher would sign our papers and comment on it to approve of it. This would be repeated each week at Sunday.

  6. Planning the Reflection I can say the the whole project over all was very successful and the planning of project was as well successful, other than the minor problems we had with the project in the beginning. Our first problem was that the reading buddies time was in the wrong sessions because we had to miss out break and advisory to attend the reading buddies, and we would regularly get to class late because we would end the reading buddies as the class starts and primary is a bit far away from senior school. The other problem we had was that the reading buddies time was when they had lunch break and the buddies weren't equal to the number of students that went there. All these problems got solved when we changed the timing and the classes of the reading buddies.

  7. Narrating All though we had a lot of problems such as the problems I have stated earlier, such as the wrong timing in our schedule and also the wrong timing on their schedule and lastly that the time between the reading buddies and the next class was stuck and the senior school is a bit far away from the primary school. But we got to enjoy ourselfs because the project wasn’t as much as reading it was more of socializing with the small kids and that’s what made it worthwhile and fun. We didn’t just socialize with them, we also played games and helped them in their laptop. I can remember when I was their age, I enjoyed it when bigger students came to help us the small students, we would meet new people.

  8. MYP Learner Profile I would actually choose two MYP learner profile since they both are very equal and close to the project I have done for community and service which is Reading Buddies. The first MYP learner profile is Caring and the second MYP learner profile I have chosen Is Communicator. This project makes us care about our young students in school by helping them and having fun with them by socializing, this act of behavior is considered as caring. The second MYP learner profile is Communicator, which is also relevant to this community and service because we have to communicate with new and young students to help them learn and enjoy their time, this socializing improve our communication skills.

  9. Conclusion Over all this project is very good and fun to do as community and service and also have been done in the past couple of years. The reason I have enjoyed it because when I was young I have older reading buddies and I have felt what they are feeling, and then when got older in primary I was the older reading buddy of a student, and now after 4 years I have done it again and enjoyed it. I hope this project will continue forever because its one of the most projects I have enjoyed in my experience with community and service. The only thing I would like is for the organizers to increase the number of students helping the younger students in one class, because It was a mess when every student got to take care of 4-6 individual students.
