Whyisvolunteeringimportant? • Volunteering is good for a number of reasons: • It helps you meet other people in the community • It helps you contribute to your society’s well-being • It helps you appreciate your city • It helps you help other people • It helps you find a good job • It helps you understand the less fortunate

  12. Whataresomewaysyoucanvolunteer? • You can always work with volunteers through the Xiamen city government offices • You can visit old people in your community • You can teach English to the children of migrant workers • If you have a skill, you can teach it to someone else

  13. Whocanvolunteer? • Anyone can volunteer, young or old, everyone is able to volunteer their time

  14. 深圳 Thecityofvolunteers • Shenzhen is a “city of volunteers” • Many people in Shenzhen already have the habit of volunteering for the city • Shenzhen opened volunteer associations very early (1989) • You can find many opportunities to volunteer at the “U-Volunteer” stalls in Shenzhen • Even foreigners can volunteer; they don’t care about your 戶口,oryour 國籍,aslongasyouarewillingtovolunteer,thatisthemostimportant

  15. Shenzhen is China’s good example 深圳是中国的好榜样 • Other cities and provinces s in China look up to Shenzhen as it’s example to follow. • Xiamen can be a good example for the rest of China too.

  16. Newwaystomakeacontribution • You don’t have to volunteer to make a difference, there are new ways to volunteer • Part 1 • You can donate to a charity • Or, you can buy a product you need • Part 2 • You can donate your time • Or, you can buy someone else’s time

  17. You can start a business • You can also make a contribution by setting up a second business. • You can start a “social business”. A social business wants to solve a problem in society • They are not worried about profits, but by social impact

  20. What is a social enterprise? • A social enterprise is a business that wants to find a way to resolve society’s problems using finances, business management, as well as qualitative, and quantitative results. • Blind Massage Clinics are considered social enterprises: they employ blind people to the manual labour at the clinics. • Blind massage partnerships are clean, stable, and approved by the local government. They use their disability as an ABILITY to make a difference.

  21. Does China have any social enterprises? • China is just beginning to have some, we will look at three today: • Guangyuan: Alishan, Taiwan • CANYOU: Shenzhen, Guangdong • Landwasher: Jiedi, Hebei

More examples of Social Enterprises • Alishan, Taiwan • The first social enterprise we will look at is called GUANGYUAN • Guangyuan is a social enterprise that helps Taiwan Aboriginal People find work in agricultural industries • Helps Aboriginal People find work, and also to give them dignity • Shenzhen, Guangdong • The second social enterprise we will look at is called CANYOU • CANYOU is a social enterprise that helps disabled people get training, education, and employment in high-tech industries • Helps Disabled People find work, and also give them dignity • Jiedi, Hebei • The third social enterprise we will look at is called LANDWASHER • They make waterless toilets

  23. Taiwan, Alishan • Guanyuan is a social enterprise that helps the aboriginal people of Taiwan find work in agriculture, as well as help them find dignity.
