Purpose of CSP Boards • The CSP currently has 13 regional boards(networks) in the UK. • The prime function of the boards is to act as the first line of contact between CSP Council, its committees, and the CSP membership. • Each Board operates as a large committee, drawing members from a wide range of interested CSP membership in their region. • Many matters are referred to the boards for discussion by Council; representatives also bring members' views back to the Council. • Scottish Board seeks to act as a channel of representation and communication for the CSP membership in Scotland. Role of Scottish Board • To provide a forum for all sections of the CSP membership to be represented and to discuss matters affecting the membership and physiotherapy profession in Scotland. • To act as a conduit for information from grass roots membership to CSP Council and vice versa. The Board briefs and receives debrief from the CSP Scottish Representative to Council and representatives on CSP Standing Committees. • Advise and provide a key link between the Scottish membership and CSP functions on issues affecting the physiotherapy profession in Scotland. • Support the CSP Scottish Office to deliver CSP strategic priorities in Scotland. • Further develop and safeguard the interests of CSP members in Scotland. Engagement with members To be effective in its representative role, the Board needs to: Reflect the picture for the different groups of members across Scotland who work from disparate geographical locations BUT Decline in number and activity of branches means the Board has to strengthen its engagement with Scottish members CSP Board aims to re-engage with CSP members CSP Scottish Board

Engaging with the membership • Reach out to members across Scotland • Encourage members to inform the Board’s agenda and priorities • Act as a forum to discuss strategic and clinical issues in a way that fully reflects members’ views • Strengthen the CSP and the membership's influence in Scotland, as well as adding value to the Society CSP Scottish Board

Role of Board Members • Establish links with membership and actively seek their views on current issues. • Promote the value and benefits of CSP membership to non-members. • Provide knowledge and expertise from the network groups represented. • Ensure members are well informed and able to contribute meaningfully to discussion topics and are in receipt of related outcomes of Board discussion via minutes. • Represent the Board at National Meetings or Conferences and feed back information to main group. • Participate in policy development, appraisal of guidelines or new evidence, membership surveys and activities that promote the role of physiotherapy in Scotland and the function of the Scottish Board.   9. Scottish Board Planning Event: May 2008 Members identified 4 priority areas for Scottish Board: • Rehabilitation agenda • Service delivery and demand • Health Improvement • Engagement with the membership • Members also expressed enthusiasm for a regular Scottish conference. CSP Scottish Board

  10. Review of the role of the Board: Sept 2008 Session where Board members were invited to review the role of the Board and its members with the aim of driving the strategic priorities forward facilitated by Professor Maehle and Dr. Lesley Holdsworth CSP Scottish Board

Outcomes • Review Board representation • Creation of Strategy Group • to provide Scottish Board with ongoing strategic direction in the progress of its work and priorities. • Priority Working Groups: • Rehabilitation Agenda • Service Delivery/Demand • Health Promotion • Member Engagement • Scottish Board Annual Event • Engaging with Members Pilot Project • To reach and have regular two-way communication with Scottish members, building awareness and member involvement with the Board’s activities • To build the capacity of the Board • To enhance the relationship and understanding between the Scottish Board and CSP London. Current Work • 4 Priorities • 4 Short Life Working Groups have been set up and objectives defined • Composed of Lead Board members and CSP members reflecting experience & expertise • Links have been developed with CSP Professional Advisers to support activity • Exciting (and challenging) work ongoing • 2009 Conference • Focus on Long Term Conditions and Rehabilitation in line with direction of Scottish Government Health Directorate • Other areas under discussion and/or review • Graduate Employment • Protection of Vulnerable Groups • Scottish Government Consultations and Reports • Ongoing CSP activity CSP Scottish Board

How can Members engage with Scottish Board ? • Become Representatives on Scottish Board • Communicate with Board Representatives • Support Regional Networks of CSP members • Contribute to Short Life Working Groups • Access and contribute to iCSP (70% of members in Scotland are registered on iCSP). • Participate in CSP Events • Respond to Consultations CSP Scottish Board
