  2. Summer 2012 EXPANDED MTSD Summer Enrichment Program Summer Enrichment Program based on INTEREST (stays the same as in years past) Summer Enrichment Program based on NEEDS “EXPLORERS”

Program Information • Lower Middle School Campus • July 9th- July 27th • Interest Based Program • 8:30-11:30 OR 8:30-12:30 • Academic Based Program • 8:30-11:30 • Variety of options---1, 2 or 3 week long programs • Parents provide all transportation • Rec –N- Crew after care option (will be discussed later)

  4. Interest Based-Overview • Three week course July 9-July 27th • Enrichment Based on Interest • Teachers submit proposals they have developed that incorporate student interest and the unique backgrounds of the teachers • The course must have a minimum of 10 students signed up in order to run the class • Class cost is calculated based on teacher salary, cost to run SEP and supplies • Classes run from 8:30-11:30 or 8:30-12:30

  5. Registration • Remains the same as years past • Will go LIVE on Monday March 19th • Link on the MTSD homepage and through email • Online registration and payment • Courses, descriptions, duration/times and grade levels will be clearly labeled.

  10. After you have filled our the registration portion, click continue. Now you can enter your payment information!

  11. Cancellations • All courses need at least 10 students registered in order to run the class • We need to cover supply and teacher costs • Talk to your neighbors and friends! Get a group together so you have a greater chance of your class running! • If your class is cancelled please be patient, we WILL refund your money OR you can register for another course!

  15. Goals for the EXPLORERS Program • Provide academic programs with enriching activities (SMALLER class sizes) • Thinking outside the box…not your typical school day • Interactive • Explorative • Engaging • Skill development and retention • Encourage ongoing academic experience

  16. Target Audience • Offered to all K-4 students HOWEVER…… • Specifically targeted students • Students who have an academic NEED • Academic Support Students • Students identified by teachers • Parents of these students will be informed during conference time in the Spring of the opportunity

Mrs. Krista VanNostrand Current Position: Kindergarten Passions are: Passions are to encourage my students to strive for their personal best while fostering their love of learning Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/ Supervision from TCNJ Experience @ MTSD: Worked in Montgomery for 7 years KINDERGARTEN READINESS Week Long Course (offered 3x) Investigate and explore early childhood concepts, such as reading readiness skills, number sense, letters and their sounds, and the development of fine and gross motors skills, while learning through play.

Mr. Eric Sletteland Current Position: 1st Grade General Education Teacher Passions are: Reading, dogs, children Graduated with my first Master’s Degree in Language Arts and Literacy (Literacy Specialist) from Rider University. Graduated with my second Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/ Supervision from TCNJ. Experience @ MTSD: Have worked in Montgomery for 14 years 5 Pillars of Reading Incoming 1st and 2nd Grade -3 Weeks All components, including Phonemic Awareness, Phonics and Concepts about Print, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension all must be addressed and taught all while building our own individual strategies and skills in reading.

Mrs. Kimberly Staub Current Position: First Grade Passions are : Teaching and working with children to help them develop a love of learning Recently earned my Masters in Reading and Language Arts from Rider University State Certified Reading Specialist Experience @ MTSD: Worked in Montgomery for 8 years Intensive Reading/Writing Program Incoming 1st and 2nd Grade (3 weeks) Meeting your child’s reading and writing needs. Instruction will be focused on your child’s reading and writing strengths and goals. Exploring literature, and developing comprehension and reading strategies through use of guided reading and small group instruction.

  22. Mrs. Kathy Grover Current Position: O.H.E.S Academic Support Teacher Grades 1-2 Passions are: Teaching, Teaching, Teaching! Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/ Supervision from TCNJ Experience @ MTSD: 20 years in the district Literacy Workshop Incoming 2nd and 3rd Grade - 3 Weeks We will read for a purpose, learning how to choose “just right” books, use scripts to culminate in performing plays while we practice fluency, the flow of language, utilize our imaginations, and use expression while reading. Talking, drawing, and writing are a part of this course.

Ms. Lindsay Fox Current Position: 1st Grade Teacher Passions are: Reading and Art Graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and Fine Arts from Rider University Non Fiction Reading: Lapbooks Incoming 1st and 2nd Grade This summer students will explore non-fiction texts about polar animals, animal groups and insects! After we have read a researched these topics, we will create hands-on lapbooks. Lapbooks are educational "mini-books" that provide space for drawings, writings, timelines, pictures, graphs, and stories

Mrs. Jessica Kotch Current Position: 1st Grade Teacher Passions are: Reading, Writing and History Maters in Early Childhood Education and Supervision Experience @ MTSD: 9 Years Non Fiction Reading: Lapbooks Incoming 1st and 2nd Grade This summer students will explore non-fiction texts about polar animals, animal groups and insects! Ms. Nicole Salles Current Position 1st Grade Teacher Passions are: Dedicated to fostering a love of learning in all children, building off student strengths and meeting individual needs Masters Degree in Education from Rutgers University- Dual Certification in Elementary Education & Special Education Experience @ MTSD: 13 years teaching Kindergarten and First Grade in Montgomery Intensive Reading/Writing Program Incoming 1st and 2nd Grade - 2 weeks Meeting your child’s reading and writing needs. Instruction will be focused on your child’s reading and writing strengths and goals. Exploring literature, and developing comprehension and reading strategies through use of guided reading and small group instruction.

Mrs. Kimberly Charette Current Position: 2nd Grade Teacher Passions Are: A true love for teaching literacy Graduated from Kean University with a BA in Early Childhood Education Experience @ MTSD: 14 Years teaching 2nd grade Reading Comprehension Strategies Incoming 2nd- 3rd Grade Comprehension Skills at the Elementary Level will teach students how to deepen their understanding of the stories they read through predicting, making connections, creating mental images, asking questions, and making inferences.

  27. Mrs. Karen Winters Current Position: 1st grade teacher Passions are Reading and Writing Graduated with a Ed. M. in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Rutgers University Reading Recovery trained Experience @ MTSD: Have worked in Montgomery for 12 years Slide Into 2nd Grade with Ms. Maple (Literacy Portion) Incoming 2nd Grade In Animal Explorations we will be studying a different animal every day.  We will be reading some fiction and non-fiction books, and entering facts into our animal research book.  Throughout the week, we will be having fun while sharpening our reading and writing skills!

Ms. Brittany Maple Current Position: K-2 Academic Support Teacher (Reading and Math) Passions are: Reading and working with children of varying levels Graduated from The College of New Jersey with a degree in Elementary Education and Psychology- currently working towards my Reading Specialist degree Experience @ MTSD : Have taught for 4 years - 3 of which were 1st grade & now Academic Support Slide Into 2nd Grade with Mrs. Winters (Math Portion) & Math In Motion Incoming 1st and 2nd Grade Build number sense and fact fluency through kinesthetic and hands-on activities.  Explore numbers and play games, build our strategies for addition and subtraction. 

  29. Mrs. Fatima Mughal Current Position: 2nd Grade Teacher Passions are: Reading and Art. Bachelors degree in education/art Masters in early childhood education, both from The College of NJ. Experience @ MTSD: Worked in Montgomery for 7 years. Around the World-Reader’s Theater Incoming 2nd-4th Grade Develop scripts for their choice of stories from around the world. They will have the opportunity to create props for their stories and practice using their voice to depict their characters while performing in groups. Through these activities, students will enhance writing and comprehension skills, as well as develop fluency!

Mrs. Mary AnneVastardis Current Position: 2nd Grade Teacher Passions are: Love of learning, balanced literacy approach and research based instruction Elementary Education and Masters in Educational Administration Teaching Experience: 12 Years Intensive Writer’s Workshop Incoming 3rd- 4th Grade Students participating in Expanding Narrative Reading and Writing will learn to take small moments in their own life and connect them to their writing.  We’ll investigate authors who are experts at their craft to model how to incorporate beginning hooks, stringing several moments together, using voice and concluding their story.

  31. Ms. Dawn James Current Position: 3rd grade teacher at Village Elementary school Passions are: Loves helping children and learning new things. Has worked with a diverse population including children with special needs and advanced learners. Master’s in Education and her Supervisor’s Certificate Experience @ MTSD: 12 years of teaching experience. ·  Problem Solving in Math (2 weeks) The Writing Club Incoming 3-4 Focus on various problem solving strategies in an effort to help them correctly solve the given word problem.  Focus on Two-step word problems.  And using higher-order thinking skills to construct their own story problems.

Ms. Kristen Ciosek Current Position: 3rd Grade Teacher Passions are: Enjoys traveling and reading Undergraduate degree from West Chester University in Elementary and Special Education Masters Degree in Educational Administration from The College of New Jersey Masters Degree in Special Education from Rider University Experience @ MTSD: Have worked in Montgomery for 7 years Reading Comprehension Incoming 3rd-4th Grade Students will be taught various comprehension strategies through fun and interactive ways! Your child will walk away with a variety of strategies that will help them be more successful in their reading lives!

Mrs. Erica Disch Current Position: 4th Grade Spanish Teacher Passions are: languages, reading, dance, art, entrepreneurship and lacrosse Graduated Georgetown University with a BS in Spanish-emphasis on linguistics. -I have travelled extensively and have taught ESL to inner city children. -ESL certificate through TCNJ Experience @ MTSD: 9 Years English As a Second Language (3 weeks) Incoming 1st -4th Grade Small classes will provide your child with individual attention. Course will cover basic survival phrases, thematic units such as animals, house, and food. At the end of each unit students will present a project to their family to share what they have learned. The focus of the course will be on verbal communication.
