  • Channel 172 is designated for public safety applications involving safety of life and property.

  • Channel 184 is designated for public safety applications involving safety of life and property. Only those entities meeting the requirements of 90.373(a) are eligible to hold an authorization to operate on this channel.

  • Single-PHY devices

    • Type A: CCH-SCH-Switching Device

    • Type B: Safety-Channel-only Device

  • Dual-PHY devices

    • Type D: Both radios are Channel-Switching-Capable

  • Case 1 – All Type A devices (OK)

  • Case 2 – All Type B devices (OK)

  • Case 3 – Mixture of Type A and B devices (Problematic)

A Solution to the Interoperability Problem

  • Type C Single-PHY Device substituting Type A Devices

    • The synchronization interval is divided into:

      • Safety Channel Interval

        • Dedicated for safety channel (e.g. channel 172) operations

      • Non Safety Channel Interval

        • Flexibly used for CCH or/and SCH operations

    • Type C Device can have identical behaviors as Type A Device

      • Channel switching capability support both safety and non-safety applications

Suggested Modification to the Standard

  • In IEEE 1609, the “Synchronization Interval” should be modified and divided into “Safety Channel Interval” and “Non Safety Channel Interval”, instead of “ CCH interval” and “SCH interval”.
