  1. Assessment in Term 1 Formative CCA

  2. Formative CCA • Coincides with your usual clinic sessions for most of you • week commencing 22nd November • week commencing 29th November • Rota already drawn up and this final rota has been sent out • If you have any problems with this then please let Francesca know ASAP! • Do not worry if you were due to be a specialist clinic as Joyce will allocate a colleague to cover this

  3. Structure • Examining Teams • 2 examiners (from within staff at the BSO, but from different teams) • Many GOsC trained • All assessor trained: Received training at the BSO by senior GOsC external examiners • 1 Moderator for each pair of teams • 3 students per team • Per student • 1 new patient (1hr 30 mins) • 1 returning patient (with summary) (45 mins) You must identify and book them in appropriately

  4. Further support • During the exam, limited literature will be available to refer to • Runners will be used to act as messengers etc as necessary • A tutor will be a floor supervisor and is there to advise if you are unsure of anything • Only 1 team point will be open during the formative exams • Patients are charged 50% of the normal fee (Either £10 or £5)

  5. Session Design • Staggered • Break between patients • Catch up • Time for examiners to talk with you if appropriate • Further questioning

  6. Your responsibilities • Organization of RP • Write a brief summary • Designed to bring the examiners ‘up to speed’ • Not meant to be a full account • No more than 1 side A4 • (see handout circulated) http://bone.bso.ac.uk/file.php/263/OP_summary_template.doc • Given (typed) to examiners before the exam (3 copies) • IT IS NOT ASSESSED • You will also be provided with a self assessment form to complete following the exam itself

  7. On the day • Turn up! • If delayed/unwell make sure you contact us early • Ring main school number • DO NOT GO through to clinic appointments • Hold and speak with Operator • We can reschedule • Appearance • As usual (student handbook)

  8. On the day: Professionalism • Try to take responsibility • Decision making • Time keeping (within reason) • Letter writing • Completing Case histories (Tutors on the day will sign) • Informing your patient of all that is happening • If you know you are being held up, let your patient know! • Try to take as much responsibility for decision making as you can: Do not expect the examiners to act as tutors!

  9. Feedback • Exam is to act as an indicator of your progression • It will be stressful • It will be nerve wracking • DO NOT PANIC! • If you need to take a break/time out that is okay • Official feedback during week 12, including your tutor reports • You should take time to prepare your own student self assessment • You can also speak to the tutors after your exams for clarification of your feedback if you have any further questions

  10. What happens if I fail? • The outcome has no bearing on your final grade • You will be given clear, negotiated advice on where to develop • You are expected to plan how to address these elements • Clinic tutors & Academic tutors will be able to help you with this • I am always available to discuss things with you

  11. What happens in March/June • Very similar format to the formative exam • 2 NP’s and 1 RP • External assessors will be part of the team of assessors • Both CCA’s are summative (40:60 weighting of the CCA total) and account for 60% of the OP total

  12. Common myths • “50% of students fail” • “I will get a grilling if I am failing” • “If a patient fails to attend I will be ‘interrogated’” • “If I fail the formative it does not bode well for the summative” • “We advertise free appointments for patients”
