Moffat Hockey Stick

  • First Hockey stick (1840)

  • Made by Mi’kmaq people

  • Named after William Moffat

    • Nova Scotia, Canada

  • Flat blade

  • Made of sugar maple

  • Called Hurley on ice at time


Wood hockey sticks

Wood Hockey Sticks

  • First Real Hockey Stick

    • Not much change from Moffat stick

    • Longer and more sturdy

    • No curved blade

    • Heavy wood

  • First Curved Stick (1950)

    • Curved blade

    • Easier to pass/shoot puck

    • Easier to elevate puck

    • Lighter wood (laminated plywood)

    • Introduce flex

    • Christian Brothers Hockey
