  1. Davis High School Track and Field 2014 Season Parent/Athlete Informational Meeting

  2. Our Philosophy • We believe every student-athlete willing to embrace the “team concept” should have the opportunity to participate on a competitive interscholastic team. • Our mission is to provide an environment where each student-athlete can strive to better him/herself as an athlete, teammate and human being.

  3. Our Goals • Individual Goals: The team supports individuals in their attempt at improving their own best marks, regardless of how these marks compare with those of other athletes. Many student-athletes aspire to continue their track and field careers after high school, and we have numerous former Blue Devils competing at the NCAA level.

  4. Team Goals: All four divisions seek to win the Delta Valley Conference championship. Our varsity teams seek to win the Sac Joaquin Section Championship.

  5. We have seven different event groups – sprints, hurdles, throws, horizontal jumps, high jump, pole vault and distance – and each event group has its own event coach. Sprinters – Spencer Elliott Hurdlers – Jonathan Defty Throwers – Lauren Guerrieri Jumpers – Leo Sacramento High jump – Hideshi Okamoto Pole Vaulters – Rick Harper Distance runners – Bill Gregg Assistant coach – Tim Groth Our Coaches

  6. Expectations: What student-athletes expect of DHS Track and Field • Professional, responsible coaching in each event group. • Opportunities for athletic success – We will seek to get as many athletes into as many great meets as we can. • Opportunities for personal success – We will give each athlete individualized training and attention, regardless of ability. • Opportunities for athletic/personal success as a competitive collegiate athlete and a life-long, healthy individual. • A Team.

  7. Expectations: What DHS Track and Field expects of student-athletes Commitment: Student-athletes will work hard at practice every day. Responsibility: Student-athletes are responsible for “managing” themselves at practice and at meets. Character: A DHS track and field athlete is a member of this team during practice and meets, before practice and meets, after practice and meets, during the week, during the weekend, at school, away from school, and over vacations. Always remember this when you are making important life choices.

  8. Please do not join the team if… • Your only reason for joining is to earn PE (I.L.S.) credit. • You intend to quit prior to the end of the season.

  9. Team Guidelines and procedures: Practice • Come to practice every day. Contact Coach Elliott before practice if you will not be there. We will take attendance. • Student-athletes are responsible for getting the information missed during an absence. • Arrive before 3:50; Announcements begin at 3:50, warmup at 4:00. Practice ends at the discretion of the event coach. • Be prepared for practice: Attitude and equipment.

  10. Attendance • Athletes with consistent practice conflicts must fill out a “practice conflict request” sheet. • THREE unexcused absences will result in removal from the team. • Athletes must ASK permission to miss practice no less than 24 hours prior to that practice. • Athletes may not use another athlete as a messenger to tell me they will not be at practice. • Nick doesn’t have to come to practice if he doesn’t want to.

  11. Examples… Examples of excusable absences: • Family commitments cleared in advance • Doctor or dentist appointments cleared in advance • Sick with the flu and missed school Examples of non-excusable absences: • Sorry Coach, I had a lot of homework yesterday. • I have shin splints and I’m really sore, so I needed a day off. • I’m going to a concert. • I’m going to a birthday party.

  12. Guidelines and Procedures: Meets • DVC meets are mandatory meets for every athlete. Plan your schedule accordingly. • I expect everyone to stay at league meets until the end of the 4x400m relay (This is not necessarily true of invitational meets). Let your event coach know before the day of the meet if you must leave early.

  13. DHS Athletic Clearance Card • In order to practice on 2/11, I need your “DHS Athletics Clearance Card.” • You will receive this card when your sports physical forms done through the Athletic Office. Contact Dennis Foster with questions: dfoster@djusd.net. • There will be paperwork nights on 2/4 and 2/6, 6-8pm in the north gym.

  14. Medical Clearance • If you have a physical on file from a DHS sport (this school year) you do not need to do another one. • I do need your emergency card. You can pick this up in the athletic office or just fill out a new one.

  15. Transportation/Entry Fee Contribution • These are due on the first day of official practice: Tuesday, February 11. • The fee offsets transportation and entrance fee costs.

  16. Roster Form • This form gets you on the roster. This is what the school uses to clear your absences for meets and check your grades for eligibility. • I use the email address listed to send information about departures, dismissals, awesome Blue Devil performances, etc. • Please Print Clearly!

  17. Uniforms We are not pre-ordering this year. Instead, we will be selling uniforms at practice. Stay tuned for more information on this.

  18. I need help… For the past few years we’ve relied heavily on a few parents to help staff meets/coordinate parent volunteers. I am in great need of someone to fill this role.

  19. Meet sign up… • We need volunteers to help run our home meets this year… • Please see the sign up table to sign up now.
