  1. REDD+ FOR THE GUIANA SHIELDTechnical Cooperation Project Data management Sabá Loftus, ONF International 10-11th December 2013 2ndSteering Committee, Macapá

  2. Why important to talk about it (tools will be accessible, information is starting to be produced and may want to be shared from country level). • All Data will be accessible to Steering Committee at Regional Level • Aspects to consider: • Which type of Data? (e.g Final information / Reports) • Data Sharing Policies • Tools • Collection of Data Data

  3. What data to be shared • MoU includes agreement to share relevant technical and other strategic information in the area of REDD+ that are within the scope of the “Project”. • Some data will be produced at Regional level. • Country • Regional • GIS Data base • Project Creation of Tools

  4. Data Sharing Policies It is up to the Forestry Services which information they would like to share. But there is two levels of information – confidential / non confidential. Do we want to share non-confidential information publically? • Confidentiality Agreement: The MoU states we must indicate when sharing confidential…this can include written or verbal information. • Non disclosure of Confidential Information: In the MoU, we agree we cannot share information marked confidential without prior written consent from the Party who has produced it. Remember….

  5. Data Collaborative Platform: • Website with all project documents & reports, presentations, calendar, links to collection database and GIS databases (see next slide). • Using free open source software? (e.gWordpress or Joomla) • Using private paid for software provider? (e.gNing) • Combined / hosted via BlueHost for security, protection, domain name, backup and storage capacity.

  6. Data Storage The project website will link to one of these to allow forestry services / project team to directly upload relevant data for the project: Drop box Pro: https://www.dropbox.com/business/pricing Google Drive: https://www.google.com/settings/storage • Pro’s: • 100 GB storage • Unlimited file recovery • Unlimited version history • Data will not be lost when stop paying…just can’t add new data • Con’s: • If you run out of space next option costs approx 500 euro more • Pro’s: • Can add more storage as needed (pay extra) • Can edit documents at same time. • Data will not be lost when stop paying…just can’t add new data • Con’s: • Max file size 10GB • Cannot retrieve deleted • files • Version history not as • good

  7. GIS Database

  8. Mapping software Options Web mapping tool in Qgis (LizMap): 3liz.com/ GIS database online with administrator uploading data. Offline Mapping Tool (Atlas): http://www.wri.org/publication/interactive-forest-atlas-central-african-republic-atlas-forestier-interactif-de-la Offline GIS database with forestry services inputting data directly • Pro's: • Easy Access • Dynamic (Can be developed / be updated) • Can be continued after project is over. • Means other regional partners (e.g CI / GSF / WWF) can also be asked to add data. • Con’s: • Not free & can be lost if not paid for. • Pro’s: • Free. So, only costs will be DVD or hard-drive • Always will have it (So, no need for long term admin). • Con’s: • Not dynamic (Once done its done – cannot add information as published). • No advantage of shared interface • Will need to be adapted for Guiana Shield and will not be immediately accessible.

  9. Collection of Data? • Send information • Sharing using the collaborative platform • National Focal Points can collect it. • PhD Students
