  1. OpenFabrics Developers Summit SC06 VNIC Ramachandra Kuchimanchi Qlogic Corporation Presented by: Madhu Lakshmanan, Qlogic Corporation QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06

  2. Supports QLogic Virtual Ethernet I/O Controllers VEx (1GE), EVIC (10GE) and IBM Blade Center cards Existing Customer installations since 2002 VNIC is device driver for Virtual I/O Controller (VIC) card VIC card presented as true Ethernet NIC via VNIC driver IB treated as an IO bus path from Host to VIC Full Ethernet NIC semantics VIC is a remote fabric device VNIC – Ethernet Virtual I/O Controller Device Driver QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06

  3. Q05 VEx – Basics of operation LAN veth0 IB Link Ethernet Link Load VNIC driver VEx QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06

  4. The VNIC driver runs on the host as a Linux Kernel module It provides a standard Ethernet interface to the system It communicates with the VIC card via IB Control and Ethernet data transfered via IB “bus” The VNIC driver QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06

  5. User loads the VNIC kernel driver User runs a tool to discover VIC controllers available on the fabric User creates a virtual Ethernet interface using the driver by specifying a target VIC Ethernet port User can configure the virtual Ethernet interface like any other interface ifconfig, vconfig for VLANs, etc Supports any ethernet protocol: IPv4, IPv6, netware, custom ... The virtual Ethernet interface operates normally like any other interface ping, ssh, scp, netperf etc VNIC – Operation (on OFED) QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06

  6. VNIC driver - Design QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06

  7. VNIC software undergoing extensive Beta testing Targeted for inclusion in the OFED 1.2 release Targeting Linux kernel version 2.6.20 or later for inclusion Ready for inclusion into any OFED 1.1.x release Concluding Remarks QLogic Corporation – Developers Summit @ SC06
