Dark Days in US History • Moving the Native Americans • In the Southeast, “Five Civilized Tribes”: • Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Chickasaw, Choctaw • Relocate – force people to leave land • Indian Removal Act – federal government allowed to pay the Native Americans to leave • Indian Territory – Congress created land in present-day Oklahoma • The Cherokees refused to leave • Worcester vs. Georgia – Cherokee argued that the state government could not force them to move (Marshall agreed and said only the federal government could) • General Winfield Scott – forcefully led the Cherokee to the new land • Trail of Tears

Native Americans Fight Back • Black Hawk – Sauk chieftain, who led the Sauk and Fox people in a fight back to Illinois (eventually beat) • Seminoles in Florida, led by Osceola, were the only successful group to retain the land • Guerrilla Tactics – making surprise attacks and then retreating into covered areas • The Five Civilized Tribes took the eastern half of Oklahoma • The land was formerly the Plains people’s (Osage, Comanche, and Kiowa) • They developed government, schools, homes • They created the Lighthorsemen (police force)
