  1. Support of IPv6 in the UMTS Afifi, Bound, Cadzow, Perkins,Toutain

  2. Motivations • IPv6 is better adapted to the GSM than v4 • Better header • Support of large scale addressing • Support of security • Support of mobility • It is inter-operable with IPv4 (NGTRANS-see our draft)

  3. State of the work • Presentation of the Addressing infrastructure combined with E.164 names in Mineapolis and Bangkok • Presentation of a framework in the Oslo IETF meeting • Should become a working group item next IETF meeting (when we write a draft) • Discussions held showed that work has to take into account GPRS and UMTS

  4. Our Proposed Model (GSM) first step MS v6 MSC Router BSC Layer 2 Network • The GSM is a layer 2 netwrok • Take advantage of GSM mobility signalling

  5. Impact on GSM layers Registration + Auth. challange Z Y X IPv6 CM’ MM’ RR Transmission

  6. Binding update Addressing/Mobility/Security in IPv6 MSC 2 Prefix2:E.164 Prefix1:E164 New MSC MSC 1 Prefix1:E.164 Old MSC

  7. Data plane • We need to specify how to link an interface in the MSC to an RR-Session in the new MSC

  8. Step 2: Go more deeply in the Infrastructure: alleviate mobile network from IP traffic MSC V6 router BSC 1 MS motion V6 router/mobile IPv6 BSC 2 MS V6 router/mobile IPv6

  9. Step 2: Data Protocols optimization • Take the results from the PILC working Group and implement • IP Header Compression • FEC

  10. What is needed to be done • Propose extensions to CM/MM adaptations to support better IPv6 mobility (for scalability) • In IETF, work on a draft to map MobileIPv6 on top of UMTS (maybe GPRS): DNS, mobile update • In Phase II, propose RR modifications to support MobileIPv6 at the BSC level and a handover scenario
