  2. Our objective: • We will write an essay that applies three steps of the Hero’s Journey to Jonas and his adventures in the Giver.

  3. Mr. A’s Hero’s Journey Choices • The Call to Adventure • The Road of Trials • The Ultimate Boon

  4. Two ways Jonas experiences the Call to Adventure Choice 1: Two ways Jonas experiences the Call to Adventure? • Jonas sees the apple change in front of him while playing catch with Asher. • Jonas’ number is skipped by the Chief Elder in the Ceremony of 12.

  5. Introduction: Hook, Summary of the book and Thesis Body Paragraph #1:Describe how Jonas experiences The Call to Adventure.   6. Writing a Hook • A Hook is something that gets your reader interested in your essay. It should give the reader an idea of what your essay is about. It can be a question or a quote.

  7. Starting your essay off with a question. When you start your essay off with a question, it should not be a detailed question but it should interesting and give your reader an idea of what you will be talking about in your essay.

  8. Example questions 1. Have you ever been asked to take a trip to a place you don’t understand? • Have you ever taken a long trip to a far off destination? • How does love help us, when we are doing something that is challenging? • Why do we experience challenges when we’re trying to reach a goal?

  9. Starting your essay off with a quote. • When you start your essay off with a quote, it should be a quote taken directly out of the book that you are writing about. Your quote should be interesting. It also needs to have something to do with how one of the parts of the Hero’s Journey is experienced by Jonas.

You can’t make me!’ Jonas sobbed and shouted and pounded the bed with his fists.” (pg. 152) “There was absolutely nothing remarkable about that apple. He had tossed it back and forth between his hands a few times, then thrown it again to Asher. And again- in the air for an instant only – it had changed.” (pg. 24)
