Coventry University • Based in the Midlands region of the UK, about one hour from London by train • University focussed on both teaching and applied research • One of the top 25 UK Universities for working with business and 1st for working with SMEs • Strong belief and numerous examples of collaborative working, at national and international levels • Times Education Award 2011 for Entrepreneurial University of the Year

City Lab Coventry • Joined European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) July 2011 • Focus on low carbon demonstration activity in Transport & Buildings • Strong relationship between the University and Coventry City Council • Planning controls fast track process developed for companies wishing to demonstrate activity in Coventry (e.g: Car Park Lighting Sensors) • Allowing access to citizens, vehicles, buildings, roads and IT infrastructure within the city • Business support, working with SMEs, Local authority, start-up businesses and corporate organisations

A Rich History of Entrepreneurship • Entrepreneurial activity / projects began at Coventry University in 1996 (pre the completion of Coventry University Technology Park) • Graduate Enterprise Scheme (GES) – loan scheme to students, which gave the University a share in the company • GES Launched Sprue Aegis Spin Out Company which later floated on the stock exchange and the University was bought out of its share. • Followed by the Vision Works Scheme: • Location and Mentor Grant • Hot desk facilities and mix with other entrepreneurs • Virtual incubation • Ran programmes supporting entrepreneurship in underrepresented groups

Our Current Vision of Entrepreneurship • The INSTITUTE OF APPLIED ENTREPRENEURSHIP (IAE) fosters excellence, innovation, creativity and enterprise among students, staff, and partner organisations • CU is a dynamic, global, enterprising university. Working in partnership with external organisations through research and engaging students as partners in a community of learning. • Enterprise and entrepreneurship is promoted and supported at all levels – from the Vice Chancellor down • Unique Funding: Public; Private Sector Investment (Sir John Egan Fund) Venture Capital Funds

Overview of IAE products 1/3 Education • Add+vantage Modules in every course • Support students wishing to set up own venture through business idea development • BA Enterprise & Entrepreneurship • 3 years full-time programme: equipping students with knowledge and experience necessary to start and run their own company • MA Business Enterprise Development • Develop a new business strategy • MA Global Entrepreneurship • 1 year full-time programme: skills, knowledge and experience to start your own globally competitive business

Overview of IAE products 2/3 Business services • 4Front (virtual business base) • Flexi Desk (work space for short periods) • Students in Business (network opportunity for student run business) • Speed Plus (Student Placements for Entrepreneurs in Education+) • Student Enterprise Fund (start-up capital from University , repayable) • Mentoring (on-line mentoring support) • I-UEN (create new opportunities through open innovation) • The enspire Programme (Abuja, Nigeria. Nurture tech & business talent & encourage entrepreneurs across Nigeria) • Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (exchange programme for entrepreneurs)

  10. European University Enterprise Network (EUEN) • Led by Coventry University. Funded by DG Education & Culture as a Knowledge Alliance pilot scheme • EUEN builds up on the established concept of University Enterprise Networks, led by the National Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and the delivery of the Innovation UEN by Coventry University. • EUEN will establish partnerships between enterprise and entrepreneurial universities and multi-national businesses aimed at making a substantial impact on long term competitiveness in both sectors. • EUEN aims to enhance entrepreneurship opportunity by: • shaping the leadership in education institutions • building the capability to deliver entrepreneurship through education by the professional development of the academic and support staff

Who will be delivering EUEN? • EUENwill operate across 4 EU member states with university partners, business partners and dedicated partners for facilitation, project dissemination and communication. It has 10 partners (mix between HE and Industry) Coventry University (Project Coordinator) Hogeschool Ghent FachhochschuleMünster University of Turku Acerta Banco Santander Hewlett-Packard Limited Microsoft Worldwide, Education Strategy Group European Business and Innovation Centre Network National Centre for Entrepreneurship Education (UK)

  12. What will EUEN achieve? (1/2) • EUEN will enhance the structures of universities for business cooperation • 7 Higher Education – Business Co-operation Leadership Forums • European University-Business Entrepreneurial Collaboration Framework • Generic Educational Frameworks for module delivery and undergraduate and masters degrees • EUEN will create enterprising educators and empower academics to take risks • 1 Higher Education Enterprise Staff Development programme • Model and Processes for collaborative engagement • 10 new course curricula • 25 pedagogic approaches

  13. What will EUEN achieve? (2/2) 3. EUEN will deliver collaborative based projects • Portal for engaging academic – industry partners and graduates • 200 students engaged in university-business-collaboration projects • 50 businesses engaged in pilot activity • Dissemination to 10 EU member state organisations and 30 European Universities • European Legacy Network Established

Institute for Creative Enterprise • Developed to provide a unique, supportive environment to encourage graduates from A&D based degree courses to develop their business ideas into fully fledged entrepreneurs • ICE combines teaching, research and business in the arts and creative industries and is a hub for creativity in Coventry, with several cultural organisations in residence • ICE is the home for some of the School of Art and Design’s Post-graduate courses • Developed because of the loss of creative graduates to London • ICE supports small creative businesses and recent graduates by offering business support (hot desk space, mentoring, courses) • NEW Creative Enterprise Programme 2012-14 (ERDF). Providing150 graduates with business assistance – mentoring, advice, support, hot desk space, workshops, networking opportunities

What will be the impact of EUEN? • The project will directly engage the partner universities and full and associate partner businesses during the project and indirectly reach a further 100 organisations • to enable institutional senior management to develop strategic collaborations with business • to build institutional capacity for the delivery of entrepreneurial learning opportunities across campus • From an initial partnership of businesses and universities the European University Enterprise Network will be increased to a wider formal partnership of 30 Universities and 30 Businesses. • By 2020 it is expected that the network will have engaged with a minimum of 10,000 students and 2,500 businesses with a wider dissemination to 500 Higher Education Institutions
