  2. Poetry: The World in Images What is an Image? An image is a single word or phrase that appeals to one of our senses: Think of how the images in the following lines of poetry make you feel

  3. “The House on the Hill” by Edwin Arlington Robinson Through broken walls and gray The winds blow bleak and shrill; They are all gone away

  4. “The Black Cottage” by Robert Frost “There are bees in this wall.” He struck the clapboards,        125 Fierce heads looked out; small bodies pivoted. We rose to go. Sunset blazed on the windows. What images project the feeling of life in the lines above.

  5. “Lost” by Carl Sandburg Desolate and lone All night long on the lake Where fog trails and mist creeps, The whistle of a boat Calls and cries unendingly, Like some lost child In tears and trouble Hunting the harbor's breast And the harbor's eyes.

  6. “Daily” by Naomi Shihab Nye Read “Daily” page 495. Then answer the questions below on a separate sheet of paper. • What images are repeated in the text? • What is the purpose of their repetition? • What is the feeling created by this list of images? • What two metaphors are in the last two lines of the poems? • What might the metaphors mean?
