  1. Choose my Plate Web quest Nick Johannesen

  2. Introduction • Little Timmy isn’t so little. As a matter of fact, Timmy is overweight and is one of the millions of kids in the U.S. who suffer obesity. Today, one in three kids are overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Childhood obesity is now the number one health concern among parents in the United States. Timmy needs some major help with his diet, and you can be the one to show him how. By completing this Web Quest you will understand the importance of each food group, how to create a plate for Timmy, and for the rest of your family.

  3. Task • By completing this Web Quest, you will obtain many valuable resources you can use to help you with your questions about nutrition. In this Web Quest, you will learn the importance of each food group. This includes how many servings you should consume per day, the nutrients you are gaining from them, and the health benefit from each one. After you learn about each food group you will enter a food of your choice into the food database located on www.choosemyplate.gov. Entering your food choices into the database will show the importance of journaling. During this Web Quest, you will complete fun activities based on the knowledge you already have about nutrition. You will also gain knowledge to help you answer questions about nutrition, and learn valuable information on portion sizes by completing a portion distortion quiz.

  4. Process-Nutrition • Before we begin our quest to creating a healthy plate, go to this website http://www.eatright.org/nnm/games/quiz/index.html and complete the short quiz. This quiz will ask you questions based on your eating habits, so answer them honestly. By the end of the quiz, it will grade how well your eating habit is. • For an additional activity, go to this website, http://www.eatright.org/nnm/games/MythOrFact/index.html, • and complete this fun fact or fiction game • 6.8.1 Assess personal health practices.

  5. Process-Food Groups (Instructions) • Over the next slides you will learn about the five main food groups. Please take out a piece of paper and pencil, and answer the questions on each slide. Timmy needs help finding out how many servings he needs of each food group to get healthier. He also needs to know the nutrients he is gaining from each different group. Lastly, Timmy needs to know the benefits each food group provides to live a healthy lifestyle. There are websites listed under each question to help you find an answer. Please click on all of them to help you answer each question. After you answer the questions you will be asked to enter a food into the food database. This will help you learn how to journal your food and help you develop goals for yourself to maintain or improve your personal health.
