  1. Welcome to Writing … Get out… • a pen/pencil • blue sheet • poetry packet • portfolio * Put Boggle sheet on the windowsill. * If you brought in a paper for my workshop, please give it to me.

  2. Let’s share… • Why is it so effective to write “Scared” as one stanza? • Why is it so effective to write “Fantasy Land” into several stanzas?

  3. “The Sea” Read the poem on the cover of your poetry packet. Complete the figurative language chart. Answer the organization questions.

  4. Figurative Language Chart √ Simile √ Metaphor √ Alliteration √ Personification √ Imagery √ Free verse

  5. Are the Stanzas effective? I liked that it was organized into 11 stanzas because each stanza was like a chapter in the story of the sea.

  6. Are the lines effective? Each stanza is between 3 & 5 lines long. There is no pattern to the lengths. The two shortest stanzas give the poem a quick forcefulness which reflects the mood change. It is okay to have varying lengths of lines because there is no rhyme scheme.

  7. Poetry Analysis: Interpretive

  8. “The Sea” Reread the poem on the cover of your poetry packet. Complete interpretive chart with your neighbor. Be sure to have a quote from the poem for each section.

  9. Portfolio Directions… • 1. Turn in your poetry packet to the “completed work” pocket of your portfolio. • 2. Put your graded individual assignment into the “graded work” pocket of your portfolio. • 3. Turn your portfolio into the bin ONLY IF you have turned in your poetry packet. • ** If you do not have your poetry packet today, give your portfolio to Mrs. Macauley.
