  7. Where in your adult life might you use the following skills: Analyzing an author’s purpose to understand how it affects their meaning. Determining a main idea. Identifying cause-and-effect relationships. Analyzing test structure and text features to understand how they impact meaning. Comparing and contrasting in multiple sources.

  8. A Day in the Life of Louis XIV All nobles were forced to take turns living in Louis’ Palace of Versailles Each morning the court witnessed him arise (in person) They watched and waited as he shaved and got dressed They fought for the honor of handing him his shoes or holding his wash basin as he bathed They were expected to dine with him daily They were forced to wait in his presence each night as he played with his dogs and grandchildren before he dismissed them when he went to bed.

  9. How does a country end up granting absolute power to a ruler? What was mercantilism? How might it lead to competition/tension between countries? Was mercantilism the only thing causing tension in Europe during the 1600s? How did the need for a professional army differ from the traditional medieval army? How would this provide more power to a monarch? What other political benefits did the Protestant Reformation bring to Europe?

  10. Other Factors Leading to Absolutism: Mongols Introduce Gunpowder to Europe monarchs to destroy castles of rebellious or independent nobles Columbian Exchange caused population growth  Led to increased tax revenues for monarchs and demand for more public services (under king’s control)

  11. Absolutism in Russia: Peter the Great • Forcibly westernized and modernized Russia • Imported European intellectuals and experts • Forced western style and dress on nobility (shaving of beards) • Built St. Petersburg as a “window to the west” • Modernized military • Forced Boyars into state service • Strengthened economic connections to the West • Reinforced serfdom • Maintained a large standing army and expanded Russian territory

  12. Meanwhile, in England… • Queen Elizabeth I  Under Elizabeth, England became a major maritime power, defeating the Spanish Armada, and intervening in wars with Spain and France. • James I  Financial difficulties and religious dissension led to turmoil under James’s rule. More often than not, this led to the dissolution of parliament. • Charles I  Forced to sign the Petition of Right due to his abuse of power. When he broke its terms civil war broke out in England. • Cavaliers – Supporters of Charles • Roundheads – Supporters of Parliament (under Oliver Cromwell) • Commonwealth  Rump Parliament eliminates monarchy and established a republic. It fails and Cromwell established a military dictatorship

  13. England: A Different Approach The Restoration After Cromwell’s death, England restored the monarchy under Charles II, but maintained parliament’s authority over the monarchy. James II  Catholic ruler ascends to throne after Charles II, causing religious tension The Glorious Revolution  Nobles invite William of Orange (Dutch) to invade England. The protestant leader defeated James II with nearly no bloodshed and became king. In doing so, he accepted a Bill of Rights (granting parliament the right to tax, make laws, authorize standing armies, jury trials, right to bear arms, religious freedom, etc.) ENGLISH MONARCHS NOW RULE BY GRACE OF PARLIAMENT, NOT GOD!
