  2. THE MODERN (DIGITAL) CAMERA

  3. THE MODERN (DIGITAL) CAMERA Does size matter? • There are two key numbers that will go a long way to determining the quality of image that you can expect from your camera. • How many (mega)pixels ..... • ..... and how big the camera’s sensor is. • Firstly megapixels ..... • How many light gathering points are there on the sensor? • A child’s ‘play’ camera costing less than £20 • 2.1 megapixel

  4. • A basic camera costing around £50-60 • 12 to 14 megapixel

  5. • A compact system camera costing upwards of £300 • 12 to 16 megapixel

  6. • A professional DSLR camera costing upwards of £3000 • 12 to 36 megapixel (don’t ask the price!)

  7. THE MODERN (DIGITAL) CAMERA So what about the sensor? • Even some mobile phones now have cameras with 10 megapixel sensors ..... • ..... so why pay £300 (or even £3000) when they may have the same number of pixels? • The professional’s camera will have a ‘full frame’ sensor. • This is the same size as a 35mm film frame. • ‘Enthusiast’ cameras will have an APS-C sensor. • Four Thirds (Compact) System cameras. • ... and so on down ..... • to sensors that are only 4mm x 3mm. • Ie. only 1.4% the area of the full frame sensor. A good rule of thumb is that the larger the size of the sensor, the bigger each light-collecting pixel can be and the more light it can record without the need to have the signal over amplified.
