  17. Over 50% of Cañada Mexican American Engineering Students place into Pre-algebra or Algebra *A student who places into Pre-algebra has to complete 10 math courses before transferring to a four-year school.

  25. Addressing Low Persistence Rates • CA Community College students have low persistence rate from one semester to the next • For Cañada, the two-year persistence rate for all first-time students (based on a cohort study) is 38%. It’s Audience Polling Time!

  36. Mentoring Program 8 faculty mentors: BiolSci (3), Chemistry (1), Engineering (2), Engineering & Comp Sci (1), and Mathematics (1). Welcome Lunch at the beginning of each semester Each mentor meets with mentees (individually or in groups) • develop and review Student Educational Plans, • discuss academic progress and problem areas • to help students get connected with resources • provide career counseling, • assist in transfer, scholarship and internship applications.

  38. Highlights of Cañada’s S-STEM • One of only 6 programs selected exemplary programs in the nation for a site visit in May 2012.

Intersegmental Cross-Enrollment Program • Cañada students participated in senior design projects at SFSU: timber bridge, concrete canoe, and seismic design competitions. • Cañada students also participated in upper-division SFSU courses in linear systems analysis, micro-electronics, digital electronics, materials and manufacturing.

  47. Follow up Survey: 2009-2011 Participants • Out of the 77 2009-2011 SEI graduates, 40 students responded. (52% response) • All 40 of the survey respondents are still in school. • Out of the 40 respondents, 33 (or 82.5%) are engineering majors, 6 are pursuing non-engineering majors, and one is undecided. Response Scale: 5 – Strongly Agree, 4 – Agree, 3 – Neutral, 2 – Disagree, 1 – Strongly Disagree.

STEM Institute • Free program for HS freshmen and sophomores • Explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Math, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth/Environmental Science and Engineering through hands-on activities individual and group projects • Three weeks, M-F, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

  49. 2012 STEM Institute Highlights- 15 participants- 78% are more likely to consider pursuing a major in STEM;- 85% feel they benefited from participating;- Engineering and chemistry were the most popular modules;- Most participants recommend making the program longer.
