  1. Agenda: Monday 10/04/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due by Weds Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Cornell Notes: “The Atom” • Bookwork • Graph Grades • Assign homework

  2. Bell Work: Monday 10/04/10 Pick up some new Bell work paper and complete. On Page 22: What are the subatomic particles in an atom? Where are they located?

  3. Cornell Notes: The Atom • Atomic Theory • All matter is composed of atoms • An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of that element • Structure of the Atom • Nucleus • Protons – have a positive charge • Neutrons – have no charge • Electron Cloud • Electrons – have a negative charge; extremely small

  4. Cornell Notes: The Atom • The nucleus occupies a small volume. • Most of an atom is empty space where the electrons are found • The nucleus contains most of the atom’s mass. • Atomic number • Equal to the number of protons • Identifies an atom • Mass number • Equal to the number of protons & neutrons • Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons

  5. Agenda: Monday 10/04/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due by Weds Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Page 92: Bookwork: #2, 7, 8, 11-14b &14c • Page 93: Cornell Notes: “The Atom” • Page 88-89: Chapter 4 Cover Page • Page 90-91: Chapter 4 Vocab • Assign homework

  6. Page 88-89: Ch 4 Cover PagePage 90-91: Ch 4 Vocab • Alpha particle • Atom • Atomic mass • Atomic number • Beta particle • Electron • Gamma ray • Isotope • Mass number • Neutron • Nuclear reaction • Nucleus • Proton • Radioactive decay

  7. Agenda: Tuesday 10/05/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due by Weds Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Cornell Notes: “States of Matter” • Practice Worksheet (short, I promise) • Homework questions? • Work on assignments

  8. Bell Work: Tuesday 10/05/10 On Page 22: Use your book or one of the periodic charts in the room to answer. How many protons, electrons and neutrons do Hydrogen, Neon and Krypton have?

  9. Agenda: Tuesday 10/05/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due by Weds Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Cornell Notes: “States of Matter” • Practice Worksheet (short, I promise) • Homework questions? • Work on assignments

  10. Cornell Notes: “States of Matter” • States of matter • Are physical properties • Differ by how much energy the molecules have • Example: water: ice is colder and steam is hotter than liquid water, but all three are H2O (water)

  11. Cornell Notes: “States of Matter” • Solid • Definite volume and shape • Least energy, can not break intermolecular forces holding it together • Liquid • Definite volume • Indefinite shape (takes the shape of its container) • Gas • Indefinite volume and shape • Highest energy, intermolecular forces are unable to hold molecules together

  12. Agenda: Tuesday 10/05/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due by Weds Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Page 95: Cornell Notes: “States of Matter” • Page 94: Practice Worksheet (short, I promise) • Homework questions? • Work on assignments

  13. Agenda: Wednesday 10/06/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Cornell Notes: Isotopes • Homework: Any questions?

  14. Bell Work: Wednesday 10/06/10 On Page 23: List the first 5 elements by Atomic Number. Give the symbol, atomic number & mass number

  15. Agenda: Wednesday 10/06/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Cornell Notes: Isotopes • Practice: Handout • Homework: Any questions?

  16. Cornell Notes: Isotopes • What is an isotope? • Same element (proton/atomic number) with different # of neutrons • Same element with different masses • Two ways to write: Carbon – 14 Mass of Isotope Atomic Number

  17. Agenda: Wednesday 10/06/10 Reminders: Late Notebooks Due Homework due Friday Quiz Friday • Bell Work • Page 97: Cornell Notes: Isotopes • Page 96: Practice: Elemental Notation and Isotopes • Homework: Any questions?

  18. Agenda: Thursday 10/07/10 Reminders: Homework due Tomorrow Quiz Tomorrow • Bell Work • Bookwork • Homework: Any questions?

  19. Bell Work: Thursday 10/07/10 On Page 23: What charges do protons, electrons and neutrons have?

  20. Agenda: Thursday 10/07/10 Reminders: Homework due Tomorrow Quiz Tomorrow • Bell Work • Page 98: Bookwork: • p99 #11-13 • p113 #59-65 • Page 99: Bookwork: • p113 #72,74 • p114 90-93 • p115 #1,3,4,10 • Homework: Any questions?

  21. Agenda: Friday 10/08/10 Reminders: Homework due today Quiz • Turn in Homework to Homework basket NOW  • Bell Work • Isotope Quiz • Amnesty Info 

  22. Bell Work: Friday 10/08/10 On Page 23: What does atomic mass tell us? What does the mass number tell us?

  23. Agenda: Friday 10/08/10 Reminders: Homework due today Quiz • Isotope Quiz • All quite until EVERYBODY has finished • Turn in Quiz to the basket on my desk (by my sink) • You may not use a calculator • Amnesty Info 

  24. Amnesty Rules • This is a chance for you to earn some missed points. • You can correct a missed or low score notebook check and earn 50% of the original points. • This is an all or none opportunity. • Must be completed by next Friday (next notebook check) • You must fill out your score sheet as described, for each check you correct • This does not apply to homework, bell work or labs

  25. How to write this in your notebook
