  1. EVERYTHING SUMMED UP IN CHRIST KINSMAN REDEEMER JoLynn Gower April 2019jgower@guardingthetruth.org JESUS FALL FEASTS SPRING FEASTS TABERNACLE

  2. VERSE FOR THE JOURNEY • Ephesians 1:9-12 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. • Summed up: anakephalaiomai: gathered in one place • Predestined: proorizo: to limit in advance • Purpose: prothesis: sacred showbread; setting forth of a design for living

  3. SIN ENTERS THROUGH ADAM • Genesis 1:26-27  Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. • Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. • Genesis 5:3  When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a sonin his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.

  4. IMPUTATION OF ORIGINAL SIN • All people are sinners Romans 3:23 ..for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.. • People are sinners by virtue of being Adam’s descendants – born of the seed of man—enslaved to sin • The earthly domain that had been Adam’s to rule under God was usurped by Satan Luke 4:5-6 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, "I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. • Death entered • No one was saved – after death no one was with God

  5. GOD HAD A PLAN • Redeem: Padah: to transfer ownership through payment Koper (Kopher): substitutionary payment Ga’al: third party redeemer if you couldn’t redeem yourself • A person needed a ga’al if they had been enslaved by a foreigner; if they had lost control of their land; if there had been a murder in the family; if there were no heirs • John 8:34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. • John 12:31 "Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” • John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning…”

  6. WHO COULD SERVE AS A GA’AL? • A BLOOD RELATIVE • Leviticus 25:47-49  'Now if the means of a stranger or of a sojourner with you becomes sufficient, and a countryman of yours becomes so poor with regard to him as to sell himself to a stranger who is sojourning with you, or to the descendants of a stranger's family, then he shall have redemption right after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him, or his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him; or if he prospers, he may redeem himself. • RELATIVE HAD TO BE ABLE AND WILLING Problem: a slave can’t redeem a slave; all of our human relatives are born of Adam’s seed, thus enslaved to the sin from which they need to be redeemed

  7. JESUS: GOD’S PLAN • Jesus became a blood relative to humanity • Hebrews 2:14  Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil… • But he couldn’t be born of the seed of man, or he would be born enslaved to sin • Luke 1:35 The angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. • And He had to be willing • Hebrews 5:7  In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.

  8. OUR GA’AL • Redeemed His relatives who were enslaved to sin • Redeemed His relatives’ lost land (earth) • Served as the judicial executioner when someone had murdered a family member (Satan was a murderer from the beginning!) • Married the woman who had no heirs for her original husband Jeremiah 31:32 …My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. No heirs for God – no one was saved • Jesus paid the price for all of these, but so far He has only transacted business with us – His enslaved relatives; and He has only transacted business with us soul and spirit – our bodily redemption is still future • The Old Testament has many examples of a kinsman redeemer, in various roles, on a human level

  9. REDEEMING THE ENSLAVED RELATIVE • When a ga’al made a purchase, it was customary to put his seal on the deed of purchase • Ephesians 1:13-14  In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory. • A ga’al frequently put the sealed deed in a clay jar so it would be protected • 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;

  10. REDEMPTION OF OUR BODIES • Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. • Romans 8:23  And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. • 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17  For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

  11. REDEEMING THE LOST LAND • People were given headship over earth; Satan acknowledged that it was betrayed into his hands • Jeremiah 32:6-7  And Jeremiah said, "The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 'Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you, saying, "Buy for yourself my field which is at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it."' • Jeremiah 32:9-10 "I bought the field which was at Anathoth from Hanamel my uncle's son, and I weighed out the silver for him, seventeen shekels of silver. I signed and sealed the deed, and called in witnesses, and weighed out the silver on the scales.” • Jeremiah 32:14  'Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "Take these deeds, this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware jar, that they may last a long time.”

  12. WHO COULD OPEN A SEAL • Only the rightful owner (or heirs if the owner was dead) could break the seals on a deed of purchase • Revelation 5:1-3  I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it. • Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood…. • Jesus isn’t dead – He is the rightful owner and very much alive

  13. THE WOMAN WITH NO HEIRS • It was a desperate situation for a woman with no heirs who was separated from her husband by death • In this case, the levirate marriage was the law • Ruth 4:2-5  He took ten men of the elders of the city and said, "Sit down here." So they sat down. Then he said to the closest relative, "Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech. So I thought to inform you, saying, 'Buy it before those who are sitting here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if not, tell me that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am after you.'" And he said, "I will redeem it.” Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance."

  14. PASSING THE SANDAL • Ruth 4:6-8 The closest relative said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, because I would jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it." Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. So the closest relative said to Boaz, "Buy it for yourself." And he removed his sandal. • John 1:26-27  John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."

  15. THE BRIDE OF CHRIST • The church is the bride of Christ; After our body’s redemption, there is a marriage in heaven! • Revelation 19:7-8 "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. • Revelation 21:2-4I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

  16. JUDICIAL EXECUTIONER • After an appropriate trial, the ga’al was a guiltless executioner of the murderer of his kinsman • God differentiated between murder (intentionally taking innocent life) and manslaughter (accidentally) • Genesis 9:6Whoeversheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man • Deuteronomy 19:4 "Now this is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live: when he kills his friend unintentionally, not hating him previously— Deuteronomy 19:11-12 "But if there is a man who hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes him so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities, then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. • Avenger: ga’al

  17. THE JEWISH WEDDING • Covenant established; the cup of wine sealing the covenant was drunk; the bridegroom paid the price Luke 22:20  And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. • The groom went to His father’s house to prepare a place John 14:3 "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” • The groom’s father determined the time for him to return for his bride • Acts 1:7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;

  18. GIFTS FOR THE BRIDE • The groom left whatever gifts he could afford with the bride so she could prepare for the marriage • Ephesians 4:8  Therefore it says, "WHENHE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HELED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, ANDHE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN." • The groom returned for his bride with fanfare: a procession that included much of the village, usually at night • The groom came with a friend, who announced him • A shofar was blown • The groom called to his bride to join him • 1 Thessalonians 4:16  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God...
