  3. Curriculum • Reading – Standardized test • Language Arts (English, Spelling, Writing) • Math –Standardized test • Science - Standardized test • Social Studies

  4. Reading Skills • Phonics (usually done through spelling) • Vocabulary • Fluency • Comprehension • Focus Skills – conflict/resolutioncharacter’s motivessequencingtheme or moral making inferencesmain idea/details cause and effect compare and contrast fact/opinion summarizing/paraphrasing

Success on“Cold Reads” reading test • True measurement of reading skills being taught and cannot be read aloud to student • Student must show test taking strategies i.e. • underlining/highlighting • boxing/numbering paragraphs 3. preview the questions 4. reading/rereading for understanding 5. checking over their work

  7. Math • We dive right in to division 1st week of school ! • Tests/Quizzes will be given most weeks • Homework in math,Monday - Friday • Accelerated Math • Help your child to learn - keep practicing their multiplication facts EVERY NIGHT!!!!!!

  9. Science • Also Standardized tested • Most chapters will be covered in two or three weeks • Interactive Journals (grade) • Grades come from class work, homework, quizzes, and tests • Weekly experiments, labs, projects, STEM’s, “Speedbag” curriculum etc…

Social Studies • NOT tested on standardized TEST • 8 chapters to cover over the course of the year from Early Explorations to Pre Civil War and the Holocaust, including economy, government, civics • Plan on a test every 2-3 weeks • Very little homework, but students should study vocabulary and concepts.

  13. What can we do over the Summer? Science Activities • Take your child fishing! • Free fishing days provide an excellent opportunity for parents who don't yet have licenses to take youth fishing, or avid anglers to introduce a friend to fishing without having to purchase a license. On these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for all recreational anglers (residents and non-residents).

What can we do over the Summer? • All other rules (e.g., seasons, bag and size limits) apply. • License-free freshwater days for 2014 • Saturday, June 14 • Sunday, June 15 • License-free saltwater days for 2014 • Saturday, June 7 • Sunday, June 8 • Saturday, September 6 • Saturday, November 29 If you keep the fish, open up the stomach of the fish and look at the contents with your child, noting what the fish ate. Have student try to identify the parts of the fish.

  15. What can we do over the Summer? Science and Social Studies activities • Go to a museum while you are traveling. Here are some FREE museums in Florida. • Florida Museum of Natural History– Gainesville http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/ • Fort Christmas Historical Museum & Park - Christmas, FLMuseum and park is closed Mondays • Holocaust Memorial - Miami Beach • Museum of Florida History - Tallahassee • Free Sunday Family Days for families with children age 18 and under with accompanying adult.

  16. What can we do over the Summer? • National Museum of Naval Aviation - PensacolaIn addition, enjoy Blue Angels practice Tuesday and Wednesday mornings March through November. Also, on Wednesdays there is an autograph session with the pilots inside the museum. • Samuel P.   18. What can we do over the Summer? Go to the beach! • Look for shells/animals that have washed up on shore. • Take pictures and then have your child look them up on the internet or go to the library and find a book about them.

  19. What can we do over the Summer? Math Activities • Give your child a budget and have him or her use the flier from Publix and plan what to buy. • Give your child a budget and have them plan a “vacation”. • Make or purchase some flash cards for multiplication and division facts and keep them in the car. Have your student practice flash cards for 15 minutes of travel time. THEY MUST BE PROFICIENT IN THIS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN 5TH GRADE!
