  1. Understanding Theology in the Israel/Palestine Debate An Introduction What about the People of God? Rob Dalrymple PhD

  2. Issue is really one of how to interpret the Bible • What does the Bible say about the Temple? • What does the Bible says about the people of God? • What does the Bible say about the promised land?

  3. What does the Bible say about the Children of Abraham? • What is the nature of the people of God • What was the purpose for the call of Abraham and the people of God? (What was the mission of the people of God/Israel?)

  4. What is the nature of the people of God • The people of God are those who obey the will of God • For a time it was restricted to a race—until that race fulfilled its purpose • Even this was not absolute • Only the obedient Israelites received the blessings (unfaithful generation died in the wilderness; those who didn’t put blood on their doorpost also lost their firstborn) • Thus, Abraham is the father of ‘all who believe’ (Rom 4:11); and ‘if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring’ (Gal 3:29); ‘He is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter’ (Rom 2:29)

  5. What is the nature of the people of God • The people of God are those who obey the will of God • For a time it was restricted to a race—until that race fulfilled its purpose • Even this was not absolute • Ruth and Rahab and others become members of the family of Abraham

  6. The purpose for the call of Abraham • Abraham was called as the means by which God would bless all the nations (Gen 12:1-3)

  7. Why one race cannot fulfill the purpose of humanity • It restricts God’s presence to one race

  8. The mission of Israel to be a light to the nations (Isa 42:6; 49:6): 44:1 the Servant is Israel • Isa 42:6; 49:6 are about Jesus (Luke 2:32) • Jesus is the Light of the world (John 8:12; 9:5) • The promise was to Abraham and his seed (Gen 22:17) • ‘Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ’ (Gal 3:16)

  9. Every role and title given to Israel is fulfilled by Jesus • Adam (1 Cor 15:45) • Seed of Abraham (Gal 3:16) • Exodus (Matt 2:15) • Moses (Acts 3:22; Heb 3:1-6) • Law (Matt 5:17) • Manna/Bread (John 6:32-35) • Sabbath rest (Matt 11:28; Heb 4:1-11) • Sacrifice (John 1:29; Heb 10:12) • Tabernacle/Temple (John 1:14; 2:19-21) • Prophecy and Prophet (Matt 5:17; Heb 1:1-2) • Priest (Heb 4:14) • King (Acts 2:22-36) • Son of God (Matt 2:15; 3:17; Mark 1:1; 15:39) • Fulfiller of the covenant promise (Gal 3:29) • Vineyard/vine (John 15:1-10) • Water (John 4:7-14) • Light (John 8:12; 9:5) • Shepherd (John 10:11)

  10. Paul applies Isa 42:6; 49:6 to himself and Barnabas (Acts 13:47) ‘For thus the Lord has commanded us, 'I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles, That You should bring salvation to the end of the earth.’ • Jesus says we are the light of the world (Matt 5:14)

  11. Fulfillment: New Jerusalem consists of people from every nation, tribe, people, and tongue (Rev 5:9; 7:9; 22:2)

  12. Therefore, though one is prone to assume that the descendants of Abraham are limited to a physical nation/race, we see that the people of God were called for a mission that extended beyond race—to bless all nations— and we see that Jesus is the ‘seed’ of Abraham and the fulfillment of God’s purposes and mission for Israel; and that through the Spirit, the NT people of God are the offspring of Abraham; and the call of Abraham finds its consummation in the New Jerusalem, which is composed of people from all nations

  13. Eden: Adam and Eve • Abraham: People of God • Exile • Restoration of People of God in Prophets • Fulfillment in Jesus • NT people of God through the Spirit • Consummation: New Jerusalem
