  1. Chapter 25 “What is an Animal” Development of Animals Most animals develop from a single, fertilized egg cell called a zygote. After fertilization the zygotes of different species of animals all have similar stages of development.

  2. 25.1 Fertilization • Most animals reproduce sexually • Males produce sperm • Females produce an egg • Fertilization occurs when a sperm penetrates an egg, forming a unicellular zygote. • In animal fertilization my be internal or external

  4. 25.1 Cell Division • The unicellular zygote divides by mitosis to form 2 new cells in a process called cleavage. • Once cell division has begun the organism is known as an embryo. • An embryo is an organism at the early stage of growth and development • The 2 cells that result from cleavage then divide to form 4 cells, and so on, until a hollow ball of cells called a blastula is formed. • The blastula is formed early in the development of an animal embryo.

  5. 25.1 • Gastrulation • After blastula formation cell division continues. • The cells on one side of the blastula then fold inward to form a gastrula. • The gastrula is a structure made up of 2 layers of cells with an opening at one end. • The layer of cells on the outer surface of the gastrula is known as the ectoderm. • The ectoderm cells of the gastrula that continue to grow and divide, and eventually grow into the skin and nervous tissue of the animal

  6. 25.1 Gastrulation • The layer of cells lining the inner surface is called the endoderm. • The endoderm cells of the gastrula develop into the lining of the animals digestive tract and into organs associated with digestion.

  7. 25.1 Formation of the Mesoderm • In some animals the development of the gastrula progresses until a layer of cells called the mesoderm is formed. • The mesoderm is found in the middle of the embryo. • The mesoderm is the third cell layer found in the developing embryo, located between the ectoderm and the endoderm. • Mesoderm cells develop into muscles, circulatory system, excretory system and in some animals the respiratory system.

  8. 25.1 • In some classes of animals the opening of the indented space in the gastrula becomes the mouth. • A Protostome is an animal with a mouth that develops form the opening of the gastrula. (Earthworms, Insects) • A Deuterostome is an animal in which the mouth develops from cells elsewhere on the blastula.

  9. 25.1 Continued Growth and Development – • Cells in developing embryos continue to change shape and become specialized to perform different functions. Forming an Adult Animal – • Once the juvenile or larva stage has passed, most animals continue to grow and develop into adults. • Growth could take a few days or years • Eventually the adult animals reach sexual maturity
