  1. How Does it End? Diving in to Punctuation

  2. Types of Sentences • Declarative • Interrogative • Imperative • Exclamatory

  3. Declarative • Makes a statement • Ends with a period Ex. I like to scuba dive. Sharks are beautiful and miraculous creatures.

  4. Interrogative • Asks a question • Ends with a question mark Ex. Have you ever been free diving? Would you like to be my dive buddy?

  5. Imperative • Makes a command • Often (but not always) starts with an understood “you.” • Ends with a period or an exclamation point Ex. Get me that oxygen tank. Sally, don’t run in flippers!

  6. Exclamatory • A statement made with lots of enthusiasm or emotion • Ends with an exclamation point Ex. The ocean is amazing! I love scuba diving!

  7. Punctuation Reminder • When using quotation marks, remember that your ending punctuation ALWAYS goes before the ending quotation mark. Ex. “Sally,” said Mark, “get me an oxygen tank.” • The comma after “Sally” and the period after “tank” are found BEFORE the closing quotation mark.
