Vietnamese Refugees in San Diego • In 1975, there were about 8000 refugees settled in San Diego • In 1983, this number increased up 17,000 • 2010 the number is 33,000 • In 1983 more than 20 organizations: Society of the Elderly, Parents and Teachers Association, RSVN Veterans, Indochinese Mutual Assistance Association, Catholic Community Association, Buddhist Community Association, Professional Associations, Students associations….

The Vietnamese Federation of San Diego Turns 25 in 2010 Chronicles of events • The Vietnamese Community in San Diego sees the need of a joint & coordinating organization • 1983 – Historic meetings at the office of Prof. Tran Cảnh Xuân, at SDSU • The VN Elderly Association convened at Mai Flower Restaurant: The campaign committee consisted of 7 persons: Misters Trần Cảnh Xuân, Nguyễn Văn Nghi, Trang Kien, Vũ Minh Trân, Phạm Xuân Thắng, Đỗ Như Điện, and Mrs. Đỗ Thái Tần.

The Vietnamese Federation of San Diego Turn 25 in 2010 • The draft charter was completed after more than 20 meetings held at various places such as Mr. Dien’s home, the parish hall of Our Lady of Grace Church in El Cajon City, and Mr. Thắng’s garage • The 1st General Assembly convened in June 1985 at Kearny High School, Linda Vista. The charter was approved, and independent delegates were elected. • 22 associations joined the VN Federation by sending their representatives – total 101 delegates. ...

The Vietnamese Federation of San Diego Organizational structure • General assembly convenes every 2 years • Board of Representatives consists of two categories of delegation: 75% of the former are delegates designated by community associations, and 25% independent delegates. • Executive Board headed by the Federation’s president • Board of Supervisors has 5 elected members.

The Vietnamese Federation of San Diego The purpose • To coordinate the Vietnamese Associations • To create conditions for the people contribute their talent, ideas and resources • To maintain and promote the Vietnamese language, culture and traditions • To assist the VN immigrants in their social adjustment or integration • To support efforts to bring human rights and democracy to Vietnam
