Well-being. The concept of well-being encompasses the physical, mental and emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of health. This concept is recognised by the World Health Organisation. Hauora (Well-being). Hauora is the Maori philosophy of health unique to New Zealand. It comprises of:

  1. Well-being • The concept of well-being encompasses the physical, mental and emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions of health. • This concept is recognised by the World Health Organisation.

  2. Hauora (Well-being) • Hauora is the Maori philosophy of health unique to New Zealand. • It comprises of: • Taha Tinana • Taha Hinengaro • Taha Whanau • Taha Wairua.

  3. Hauora (Well-being) • Taha Tinana • Physical Well-being • The physical body, its growth, development, and ability to move, and the ways of caring for it.

  4. Hauora (Well-being) • Taha Hinengaro • Mental and Emotional Well-being • Coherent thinking processes, acknowledging and expressing thoughts and feelings and responding constructively.

  5. Hauora (Well-being) • Taha Whanau • Social Well-being • Family relationships, friendships, and other interpersonal relationships; feelings of belonging, compassion, and caring; and social support.

  6. Hauora (Well-being) • Taha Wairua • Spiritual Well-being • The values and beliefs that determine the way people live, the search for meaning and purpose in life, and personal identity and self awareness. For some this is linked to religion.

  7. Hauora (Well-being) • Each of these four dimensions of hauora influences and supports the others. • If one is depleted, then there cannot be…... Total Well-being

  8. Hauora (Well-being) • As we achieve our needs, we strengthen our state of well-being or Hauora. • They act to keep us in balance. • What would happen if one of the dimensions was damaged or removed?
