Followership what is it

Followership- What is it?

  • Similar to the concept of Leadership you have all experienced what it means to follow others.

  • Your new role as Freshman at The Citadel will bring this notion of being a follower to a whole new level!

Like leadership the concept of followership is best understood by a concise definition

Like Leadership, the concept of Followership is best understood by a concise definition

Followership – a definition

Followership Definition - “Followers of character and commitment acting to support the needs and goals of the team.”

  • This means putting the needs of others in front of your desires and building a relationship of trust and loyalty to your leader and your team!

Fourth class system what is it

Fourth Class System – What is it?

  • It is a system of requirements, traditional behaviors, duties, and expectations designed to promote this concept of followership

  • Governed by the Redbook, the Fourth Class System is one of the foundational aspects of The Citadel Experience

Principles of the fourth class system

Principles of the Fourth Class System

  • 1. All cadets must accept personal responsibility for the fair, equitable, proper, and effective operation of the System.

  • 2. All cadets must implement the System in such a manner as to support each cadet's right to achieve academic excellence.

  • 3. The System must not interfere with a cadet's right to adequate sleep and food.

  • 4.The System must provide the new cadet with the necessary positive leadership development training to be prepared to exercise leadership within the Corps of Cadets.

  • 5.The System, properly implemented, uncovers and attempts to correct weaknesses in new cadets, which might otherwise result in a cadet's failure to meet prescribed standards.

  • 6.The System provides selected upper-class cadets with the opportunity to demonstrate learned leadership characteristics as they set the example, motivate, train, and mentor new cadets.

Key Objectives of the Fourth Class System

  • To teach new cadets the value of, and allow them to develop honor, integrity, character, responsibility, and personal pride.

  • To teach new cadets the concept of selfless subordination of personal desires and comforts for the good of their organization.

  • To teach new cadets how to live within a disciplined military environment in which they are also expected to discipline themselves.

  • To teach new cadets the importance of loyalty and honor. Loyalty to The Citadel supersedes loyalty to an individual cadet.

  • To provide fourth class cadets with the opportunity "To Follow" under the mature, competent and understanding guidance of cadet leaders, as the first and most important step in becoming leaders themselves.

  • To provide each fourth class cadet with a mentor from the first class. The mentor will be the fourth class cadet's advisor to assist the fourth class cadet in coping with the many challenges the cadet faces during the first year in a military environment.

  • To teach new cadets the importance of time management and organization in order to do things correctly the first time.
