  2. Definitions Environmental Management System (EMS): part of a comprehensive management system that addresses how the overall business activities, including its products and services, impact the environment. Environment: the global surroundings in which an organization operates (includes air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interactions). Environmental aspect: an element of an organization’s activities, products, or services that can interact with the environment (ex., wastewater discharge, air emissions, and energy usage). TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  3. Definitions Environmental impact: any change, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization’s activities, products or services (ex., impacts on habitat, water supply, and soil erosion). Environmental objective: overall environmental goal, arising from the policy statement, that an organization sets for itself and which is quantified when practical. Environmental target: a detailed performance requirement, quantified when practical. Must be met in order to achieve objective. (ex., wastewater temperature controlled between 10° C and 14° C). TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  4. Background • 1991 – Strategic Advisory Group on the Environment (SAGE) was formed by ISO. • 1992 – Technical Committee (TC) 207 formed with a mission to develop standards for an environmental management system (EMS), later identified as ISO 14000. • A working group on environmental aspects in product standards was formed. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  5. ISO 14000 • Experience with ISO 9000 helped in development of ISO 14000. • Identified as “process standards” (standards that address the process rather than the end goal). • Divided into two separate areas: • Organizational evaluation standards • Product evaluations standards TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  6. Organizational Evaluation Standards TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  7. Product Evaluation Standards TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  8. ISO 14001 • Provides organizations with the elements for an EMS that can be integrated into other managements systems to help achieve environmental and economic goals. • Describes requirements for registration and/or self-declaration of an organization’s EMS. • Requirements based on the process and not on the product. • Requires commitment to the organization’s EMS policy, applicable regulations and continual improvement. 13. Benefits of EMS • Global • Facilitate trade and remove trade barriers. • Improve environmental performance of planet Earth. • Build consensus that there is a need for environmental management and a common terminology. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  14. Benefits of EMS • Organizational • Assures customers of commitment to environmental management. • Meets customer requirements (primary reason for organizations to become certified). • Maintains good public/community relations image. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  15. Benefits of EMS • Organizational • Satisfies investor criteria and improves access to capital. • Obtains insurance at reasonable cost. • Increases market share which results in competitive advantage. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  16. Benefits of EMS • Organizational • Reduces incidents that result in liability. • Improves defense posture in litigation. • Conserves input materials and energy. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  17. Benefits of EMS • Organizational • Facilitates the attainment of permits and authorizations. • Improves industry/government relations. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005

  18. Health and Safety • ISO 14001 assumes that cultural transformation takes place through employee involvement and responsibility from the bottom up, not from dictates from the top. TEC 5133: Total Quality Systems - Spring 2005
