  1. Wireless technology for Research and Educational Communities in Azerbaijan Dr. Elchin R. Aliyev September, 2002

  2. Technological networking components 1. Satellite or fiber-optic link to the world Internet-space; 2. Backbone inland (fiber-optic, radio-relay and combined); 3. Providing of “last mile”; 4. Contentinland. Let’s view in detail the 3rd segment of networking – providing of “last mile”.

  3. Topology of AzRENA Education Network Design A scheme of education network design by means of radio-relay links and wireless equipment Ethernet Bridge (IEEE 802.11) as “last mile” problem solving.

  4. Use of radio-frequency spectrum For radio signal transmission a radio-frequency spectrum ISM 2.4-2.483 GHz is used, a maximum data rate is 11 Mbps. Since January of 1997 use of radio-frequency spectrum 5GHz has been permitted. Two segments (5,15-5,35 GHz and 5,725-5,825 GHz) with a general bandwidth 300 MHz are extracted in this spectrum. A maximum data rate during use of the spectrum 5 GHz is 54 Mbps.

  5. Advantages of wireless communication for “last mile” problem solving • Fast development (installation, assembly); • Flexible adaptation to bandwidth requirements (a rate in radio link is up to 11 Mbps); • Use of usual network interfaces and protocols: Ethernet Interface IEEE 802.11 Standard • All the network applications are installed and operate without adaptation; • A fixed workload of communication line (traffic count).

  6. Shortcomings of wireless communication for “last mile” problem solving •  Considerable investments for wireless communication development for providing of a direct visibility; • Receipt of authorization for reserving a radio- frequency spectrum; •  Condition of direct visibility; •  Low security of data transmission; •  Radio frequency interference of every sort and kind.

  7. Support of wireless communication The best known and popular producers at WaveLAN market are the following companies: Lucent (ORINOCO series) andCisco (Aironet series). For support of wireless communication we use: • Wireless network equipment ORINOCO of Lucent Technologies • Software TurboCell of KarlNet (USA) ($200, $400)

  8. LucentORINOCO Products The multipurpose access point Avaya Access Point II is a portable specialized industrial computer equipped with two slots of РС-card type. $730 РС-card is a valid network adapter equipped with two built-in antennas and a socket for connection of an external antenna. $105 ($65 PCI) The device Avaya Wireless RG operates as a central base station for several mobile users. $800

  9. Use of wireless technologies • Project on enhancement of AzRENA infrastructure (NATO Grant No. NIG976370) and connection of the Association’s regional members to a backbone network; • UNDP Project “Enhancement of Data Exchange via Internet for scientific and research institutions of Azerbaijan Republic”.

  10. Network structure of AZRENA Internet connection is realized in asynchronous mode through 2 points: Economic University and National Academy of Sciences.

  11. Regional Infrustructure of AzRENA A scheme of education network design by means of radio-relay links and wireless equipment Ethernet Bridge (IEEE 802.11) as “last mile” problem solving. The fiber-optic could be used as a backbone too.

  12. AZRENA for Science and Education • AzRENA network has the channel 1,5 Mbps and links 15 educational and scientific centres. •  The number of workstations connected to Internet through AzRENA is over 900 and at present time these workstations maintain 6000 users. •  AzRENA has intra republic BACKBONE: • Baku-Mingechevir-Gandzha-Akhstafa–1Mbps Baku-Lenkeran-Astara – 1 Mbps •  AzRENA has the education centers in 12 regions of the republic.  In future planning installation of two exchange points between two networks AzRENA and AzNET in Baku and region, which allow improving networks, optimizing traffic and creating common technical Academic Educational Network in Azerbaijan.
