  3. Introductions Name: Jorge Villegas RodríguezDirector in Scientific research and human resources at Consejo Mexiquense de Ciencia y Tecnología

  4. Educational Environment • Provide one slide explaining your Education System • How large is the school system – number and types of schools Mexico is a country with 105 million people. The levels of the school system are: - Initial Education (Ages 0-3) - Pre-school Education (Ages 4-6) - Basic Education (Primary School and Secondary School - Baccaleaureate - Higher Education • How many teachers: 1.7 millions in the whole educative system • How many students: 31.24 million students in the whole system

  5. Educational Environment • The educative system in Mexico is centralized and belongs to the Ministry Of Education (MOE). There are two types of schools, Private and public, both controlled by MOE. Curricula is deployed in Basic education through text books. • Science and Maths are part of curricula starting in basic education and up to High School. These subjects are the most severe cause of failure for students. International standards shows that educative policies in science and maths have been highly unsuccesful

  6. Science Fairs What is the status of Science Fairs in your area? • Existing: Please complete if your district or country has participated in Intel ISEF • How many science fairs are held? 4 • How is the community or government involved? Increasingly positive. Cuncils for Science and Technology, NGOs, Universities and Foundations are becoming part of regional fairs • How many students entered this year, (2008-2009 academic year)? 250 scientific projects attended the 4 fairs

  7. Science Fairs What are the three biggest obstacles you face? • Organization and management: Is there district/community/government support? Yes, but we need more support and sponsorship for scientific fairs. MOE should be more interested but there are not public policies regarding science fairs • Quality of projects: Do projectsinvolve research and experimentation? Projects should involve research and experimentation, but at the level of schools there are old and traditional academic practices more oriented to see teachers doing science • Do teaching practices support project based learning? Not really • There are no public policies also to detect, keep and orient talents, and science fairs are a tremendous opportunity to work on this matter
